I am not going to defend or debate the process for selecting the location and dates for the 2007 Member's Gathering.  The parameters for the gathering were laid out at the Member Meeting last June in PF and I believe they were followed pretty well (refer to the EVENTS section of Minutes from the 2006 Member Meeting).

As Adam pointed out the 2006 MG was the first one to be located and scheduled without being tied to any other entity's schedule.  A look back through the threads related to the pre-planning and planning will show quite a timeline of getting the location and dates selected.  That took a lot of time and energy to coordinate and actually didn't leave a whole lot of time for nailing down lodging and activities.

Without much discussion last June on dates for the 2007 MG whatever timeframe was selected, regardless of the method used, would have resulted in calendar conflicts for some individuals just as it has for all of the past annual gatherings.  The location selected, by a vote, also factored into determining when the best time of the year would be to have the gathering.  Too early in the year and we'd be complaining about needing tire chains on the cars just to get out of the parking lot - too late and we'd be frying out brains out like in PF last June.   As Adam noted several dates were looked at and based on available information related to all of them (average weather info/room availability/etc) a selection was made.

Also a request was made for help in researching lodging accomodations.  And I believe a volunteer or two stepped up.  Local area knowledge is a million times better than the best internet research that can be done.  Without the invaluable commodity of volunteer help even the smallest events don't stand a chance of succeeding.

A thread was started earlier in the year, and was discussed at the meeting last June, about whether C3VR was just a website or a club.  I think the overall concensus was that we are more of a club than just a gathering of souls at a website.  I personally do not belong to a local club, for a variety of reasons, but I know a number of folks here at C3VR do belong to local clubs.  Take a look inside any one of those local clubs and you will find something that is missing (and has been talked about) here at C3VR - a club framework of officers, committees, etc. (for the most part all volunteers) to do all of the things that make a club function.  C3VR needs some of that structure to evolve as an entity.  And it won't be an easy thing to do with the membership being scattered around the globe.

As a first step I have suggested to Adam that a committee be established for planning and organizing the 2008 MG, with him functioning in an advisory capacity.  I would expect that as the process unfolds that group will get to experience most of the same frustration and anxiety that Adam has had to shoulder on his own for the most part over the past several years of planning events and gatherings.

We have had volunteers step up and help with things in the past to a limited degree.  If C3VR is to continue to grow we need to focus those energies more to make us even better as a whole.

You now have a two Larry concensius. I vote we move ahead (3 fingers up.) We now should group together to make this years event a Bigger, Better, Badder, event than the last. Our energies should be put forth into the planning phase.

Here Here!!
I have to agree...I think Adam has taken on a lot of burden over the years in organizing these events. It's a major deal to try to get something going that will afford as many as possible the opportunity to attend, and enjoy that event. No matter what, there will always be some that will be disappointed. You can't expect to please everyone.

I was thinking along the same lines as Jim(Norsky)...get a "committee" together, and have them do the legwork/planning for the next Gathering. Have someone else try to sort thru the 400 different suggestions on location, and time, and try to please them all. Sorry folks...it can't be done.

I absolutely understand some of the frustration from some of the membership in reguards to the location and dates of this up-coming event. It is a long drive for a lot of us, and the dates may not be perfect. We(Mama & I) will try our darndest to be there, but, I just don't know if I will have the vac. time by then.
Think about all of the past events, where the folks from the western part of the country have driven to the east side to attend.

Adam, as founder/President of the C3VR forum, really should be a major part of the yearly "Gathering". That means it has to be something he can attend. We all have private lives/family that need to be considered when planning a major event. The thing is, we have to do the best we can to plan something that as many as possible can participate in. It just is not reasonable to assume that everyone, everywhere, will be able to attend, and it wouldn't be fair to expect Adam to plan any event like that.

If Adam is ok with Jim's suggestion for a "Planning Committee", I think that would be the best solution to this issue. I think a lot of folks will be amazed at the work Adam has put into these events, on his own.

I think of C3VR as an extension of my family. Anyone here have the "perfect" family, where everyone gets along, 100% of the time? I didn't think so. In my family, we have our squabbles...some worse than others. But, at the end of the day, we're still family. (Whether we like it or not, sometimes!)

Group ya'll!
