How will be be able to spend money during this trip? Should we get Canadian cash? If so, where? Is it ok to simply use a credit card for everything?

It's been my experience to do as much as you can on a debit/credit card. The exchange rate is done the day the transaction is posted (I believe). Just make sure you let your card provider know you'll be traveling out of the country so transactions don't get blocked.
And some cash in the pocket is always a good thing. Your "home" bank will probably do the exchange without charging a fee. But most any bank in Saskatoon should work as well. A cash advance from an ATM in Canada would be another way to get some pocket money but most credit cards charge a fee for it. Getting cash back on a purchase from a retailer may work as well.
A lot of credit cards charge a fee for a foreign transaction. It's probably worth it avoiding the hassle of exchanging a bunch of money.

We got Canadian cash from Bank of America. Don't do that!!! The exchange rate was 75.6 cent, that day. They charged 79.8 per dollar plus $8.10 service fee. I don't know about other banks but that is RIDICULOUS. I will use a credit card from now on.
I don't get it guys, I always take US money with me, I go to the bank and they do the exchange, yes they add a little to the exchange, but cash is always good to have in your pocket would never rely on plastic alone. What would you do if your card wouldn't work for some unknown reason, or their banking machines are down, without some cash on hand you will be stranded
Guys - this is Canada not the jungles of South America!
Pretty much every retailer/restaurant/hotel accepts U.S. Currency, and your ATM/credit card should be fine everywhere.
With that said - whenever I go to the U.S., I always bring a bit of U.S. cash with mae also. ;-)
