In this thread please enter suggestions for the location of the 2010 Member's Gathering.  Offer up as much information as you can about the location (things to do, places of interest to see, scenic drives in the area, etc.).  If possible do some research to see if there are any other activities scheduled for the area so dates can be selected to make lodging easier to obtain.  One city/area per post please.

This thread will be for listing suggested locations only.  All discussion related to the topic will be carried on in this thread: 2010 C3VR Gathering location?.  Any posts made in this thread that are conversational in nature will be moved to the other thread.

This thread will remain open for suggestions until after the 2009 gathering has concluded in mid-July.  And remember that all the locations must be located in the
West Region.

I say the coast.
Newport, Seaside, Coos bay Oregon.

All have great activities for the family, shops and great drives anywhere along the ocean to through the mountains. Tillimock Cheese Factory is a nice tour. See the bridge that Jack and the boys went under when they hijacked that boat in "One Flew over The Coo-Coo's Nest".
Lots of touristy stuff for folks who might just want to fly out and vacation from back east.
The pictures would be calender type material.

I am up for anywhere but nothing beats a nice hotel over-looking the ocean on a summers day.

My second choice would be Bend Ore.
East side of the mountians so not quite the same NW flavor to it but a nice town to visit.
A cruise down to Crater lake would make a good day trip.

Just a little  FYI about Bend.....
I spoke with Angie, sales director, at the Visit Bend Center.  I explained that the club was considering Bend for next years Gathering site.  The number of members would depend on the pricing & the economy.   Below is a partial list of activities and events in Central Oregon.  The list is based on this year.  I'm sure I have left some things out.  I would encourage anyone  interested, to go to the site for a more detailed description of the events & activities.     For those interested in a drive to Crater Lake, it is about 110 miles/2+hour drive.  There is also a great drive outside of Sisters, 15 miles west of Bend, The McKenzie Highway.  It goes through  tremendous lava flows & what seems like a rainforest.  Lots of Curves. There are full day & 1/2 day rafting trips. Also, there are several car clubs in the area, High Desert Corvette  Club & the Classic Chevy Club, that we should be able to put something together.
Angie also offered to contact the local hotels, recreation & dinner establishments, for group pricing, (discount).  She will be willing to  draft a letter on C3VR behalf, requesting pricing.
For a more detail description of the events, go to www.visitbend.com

Also:
I e-mailed a member of the High Desert Corvette Club, here in Bend.  This is his response:

Mike, You might be in luck..  In 2010 our Corvette Club will be putting on our Deschutes River Run which we have every other year.  It's a pretty big event and we always have a great showing from the other clubs in Oregon/Wash.  Usually we have a Poker Run, this gives everyone a long country drive picking cards up through Central Oregon, a lunch stop, then in the evening we have a dinner with a silent raffle of some sort.  Next year it will be in Sisters which as you know is a beautiful place for such an event and dinner will most likely be at Aspen Lakes Golf Course.  Not sure if something like this would interest them but it's a fun event.
Not sure how long your club will be here, but I'm sure we could also put together a nice drive to Crater Lake or over McKenzie Pass down through McKenzie River for lunch and back over the Santiam Pass.  Lots of things to do...

I will check with our Activity Director and send your note a long to her and mention it at our next Club meeting.
I just wanted to give you some info about Bend.
Me, I love road trips....
82Mike

Here's my thoughts from the other thread:  (see Jim, I'm trying to be good!)

This is what I composed from my Hotel in Garibaldi, OR:

Oregon coast is beautiful.  I'm there this weekend :)  Driving on 101 would be great fun in the Vettes.  Prolly have to be in July or August to avoid lots of rain.  This weekend is absolutely gorgeous!  Was around 80 yesterday!  There was a beautiful c3 vert parked outside my window last night.  Bet they had a great drive.

Larry (bad larry) started an email amoungst us northwesterns to come up with a proposal and ideas for activities.  Not sure where that stands now, but we are batting ideas around.  There's lots of beautiful scenic drives in the NW...Columbia river gorge, Mt Hood Loop, Mt St Helens, 101 on the coast, just to name a few.

To add to that posting, if we do this any where near one of the major beach towns, we HAVE to avoid any holidays.  Traffic in Seaside was a nightmare on July 5th!

I took a drive to Cape Mears lighthouse (a short drive from Tillamook, OR).  It was a beautiful drive but the road sucked (many potholes).  We could do something like that in the Vettes but would want to take it slow at times.  I hit one hole in the Beemer and expected the left front tire to start leaking!  We'd have to scout out the roads before planning any drive.

I'd be happy to help with planning a gathering in the great NW and doing some scouting!  I, too would miss the drive to the event but it has to be close to someone -- preferably several someones.  If it were near Portland, Mike & I would be happy to take some of y'all on our boat on the Columbia River.  We could also rent the RCYC clubhouse for a gathering (subject to availability...the sooner we book the better).  Holds enough people (you'd have to park in a gravel lot which means washing Vettes, but it's a secure parking lot).  If we wanted to do a dinner there, it'd have to be pot luck.  Mike and Bad Larry could conspire to BBQ the best ribs ever!

OK.  I've rambled enough.  I'll add other thoughts to the thread as they come to me!

By the way, I lived in Colorado Springs for 5 1/2 years.  I love that area but have a hard time thinking of it as the West!  And those thunderstorms.  YIKES.  We had one car damaged by hail...bad....

My thought is to have a location which takes advantage of both coastal and mountain drives.  Personally, I'm in favor of something close to Portland - just because I know a little more about the area.

Salem-Woodburn would work quite well.  Have some drives in mind.
1. Around Mount Hood,
2. Tillamook, Lincoln City (Coast).
3. Willamette valley wine tour
4. Evergreen Aviation Museum (Spruce Goose).

Woodland-Longview area would also work.
1. Columbia River Gorge - around mt. Hood
2. Lower Columbia, Grays River, Astoria Bridge, Seaside, Mist (Banjo country), Clatskanie.
3. A 'Todd Smock Memorial' Mt. St. Helens tour.
4. Could still do Wine country/Spruce Goose but about 4 hours RT.

Vette(s): had a really nice one. sold it to a good friend. Purchased 2004 custom coupe in Feb. 2009 did not tell anyone here until August 2009. BAD I KNOW.
I would like to add our own back yard so to speak.  The grays harbor area.
1) deep sea fishing, whale watching, razor clam digging (maybe) fishing for dungness crab.  trips into the rain forrest, mt rainier, mt st helens,  casinos, trips to hood canal.  BBQ AT LARRY"S. pictures at Tmans tree farm.  where i live there is only one(1) not a typo, stop light, we are small nice community that is 2 to 3 hours away from seattle portland and canada.  our cost of living is very low so we could get a lot of bang for our buck.  we would also be able to get lots of time in local news paper and radio as well, our little meeting would generatre a lot of talk.  great roads to make a cruises up on.  have lots of places we could have very large turn outs at with little to no traffic.  we also have a very active strong group that would put on one hellofa getogether, thats a promise.
there i did it.   lets see june july there is stuff going on every week end at either westport or ocean shores mid july huge harley festival, first part of august hydro racing in seattle (maybe mike and karen could have sail boat for us to watch from water.
