I think Reno itself is OK, but not the best in the area. Carson City is smaller, friendlier and has a good amount of hotels and casinos. Of course there is always Lake Tahoe, up in the mountains. Cooler, more picturesque but perhaps a little pricer. Big casinos, many many motels and places to see and eat. The mountain roads here make for a fun ride. One pass is at 8k ft. elevation and drops to about 4k, a real fun ride. Reno is a traffic nightmare, and they have a lot of summer events. Just food for thought.

How far apart are Reno and Lake Tahoe?

Lake Tahoe - North shore - would be nice, just not south shore. Carson City would be nicer. Been to Reno, Salt Lake and San Diego - didn't leave anything at any of them to go back for. San Diego would clearly be the best of the three - San Diego Zoo, Sea World, etc. plus proximity to LA if one wanted to go there.
Adam, Reno is about 30 miles from Carson City, and Lake Tahoe is about 30 miles from Carson City and a little more that 30 from Reno, if you look on a map, you'll see that it's kinda like a triangle between them. Mt. Rose highway is the pass that's at 8000 feet and comes into Incline Village or Income Village as we locals call it. It's just South of Reno, and US 50 comes out of Tahoe and goes into Carson City. Any other info you need just ask. Lake Tahoe is awesome, it's the highest alpine lake in the U.S. There are boat tours of the lake, with one stern wheeler having a moon lite dinner cruise with dancing, we've been on it. Two tram rides that make you short of breath and shopping galore for the ladies. I'm with Terry on Salt Lake and San Diego. After being in Salt Lake in June, I would be happy to jump in that foul smelling Great Salt Lake just too cool off, San Diego, well if your in the Navy or speak Spanish it's OK, but it's big and well, you get the jest of it. Terry has a valid point about the North Shore, I like it better that So Lake Tahoe. However there is more in the way of attractions in So Lake.

Great driving roads East of SLC around Jackson Hole Wy and the Tetons. That might be a nicer (and certainly cooler) place. San Diego is WAY too crowded for us and fuel prices will be highest there I would suspect.
On the other hand, if you want to drive on some of Rt 66, then New Mexico May be a good choice as Rt 66 goes thru Albuquerque and Gallup. There are some cool roads off the beaten path in New Mexico up around Santa Fe, and some good deals in the off season at the resorts, but it sure is boring getting there if you take I-40.

I'm not opposed to the group staying in Tahoe, since it is only 30 miles from Reno, if people think that is the better place to stay between Reno and Tahoe. Perhaps, I should change the city choice to "Reno/Tahoe" and if that gets picked, we'll figure out which is the better place to set up camp.
How does that sound?

Well we just would like to say and no hard fillings toward anyone.
It seems that most of the east and central folks are or will pick a close city while voting more then the west coasters (Not sure if we have a lot here). Just like when east coast picked PF and the west coast people where in the same traffic jam.
We should contact the west coasters to see if anyone will help in organizing some events at these cities. Then when the information comes handy. Might make the voters conclude to one city that represents the atmosphere we all like. Don't forget as a saying 'you can't please everyone'.
My lady and I will wait this vote out. No matter where it will be held we all will have a wonderful time.
(added by Adam:)
If the above doesn't make sense... here is a brief summary:
We need votes and input from the
members on the west coast to help us east coasters decide which is the best place to go, and what to do once we get there.
Of the three choices I've been to two of them: Salt Lake City (actually Park City/Deer Valley) and San Diego. Flown to both so don't know what the drive would be like. Never been to the great state of Nevada so that holds some appeal (Lake Tahoe is on the list of winter ski trips to make though). Some serious $$$ will need to be dropped into "The Toy" before attempting to trek to any of them.
Great things can be said about each of them so like others I'll be waiting a bit before voting.
The SLC area is usually in the 80's in June and it's a "DRY HEAT". June is also the driest month of the year in Utah. Precip averages .25 for the month. The liquor laws may be unusal to some people, but, are not as bad as the reputation. If you want a drink, you can generally get one anywhere you want. Park City is a cool town. Worth a visit. There are several canyons that are steep with twisty roads in close proximty to SLC. Don't be afraid of the Mormons. Lived here many years and never been bitten. Very nice people. More like everybody than not, and, I've never seen one with horns except at Haloween.Ever since the Olympics there is a bevy of hotel choices and the rates are very reasonable. I wouldn't mind Utah because I live here, but, there is a lot to see and do. When my family comes to Utah ( from upstate N.Y.) they are always blown away. They come alot because of it.
