This was told to me by my friend (yes, at one time I had some, but I had to rent them) that was the manager of one of the first "Cost-Co" type membership stores.  This happened in Salt Lake City.  A woman had picked up a box of Tampax (also this was before EVERYTHING had bar codes and was scanned in).  When she got to the check out line, there was no price on the box.  So the checker bent over that microphone that is on a stand and asked for a price check on a 36 count box of Tampax (this alone embarrased tha lady).  Well, the person in back thought the checker asked about a price check for THUMBTACKS....so the person in back got back on the loudspeaker and asked "Is that the kind you push in with your thumb, or pound in with a hammer".  The lady walked out.  I was told this by the store manager!!!!!!
