Well in my process of my paint project I'm tossed between rechroming my bumpers or replacing with aftermarket. What expirence have you guy's had in replacements? Where have you gotten them? I've checked Mid-America, Vette Central, Ecklers. It is around the same price either way, around $1000.00. Vette Central has a foreign made set for 699.00. Kinda scary though. Thanks, Terry

Whatever you do, do NOT buy a foreign-made bumper set!!! They have been known to be really bad quality. If you are familiar enough with the way the bumpers are made, and chromed, you can definitely SEE a big difference in the quality. I would suggest you either have yours re-chromed by a reliable source, or buy only US made replacements.
A lot of the NCRS nit-pickers use Paragon bumpers, but I'm sure there are others that are just as good.

Check with the aftermarket suppliers. I've been told (for whatever's that's worth), that some of the aftermarket bumpers are actually made by the original supplier on the original tooling. The only thing different is there's no GM markings.

Don't know how true that is, but it's worth investigating.

If your original bumpers are still in good physical shape, I'd send them to a quality rechromer. You know they'll fit without modification. Some aftermarket stuff may not be made to correct specs and even if you install them properly, may not mate up with the body as well.

Just my opinion.

My 2 cents.............Rechrome what you have.

I base this soley on fit.  I had a choice to buy a new radiator or have mine re-cored, I went with the re-core and it fit perfectly.  I did the same when it came time to rebuild my front A-Arms.

I plan on doing the same when it is time to do my bumpers.

Good luck,

Anthony

There could be a fit issue with any bumpers other than the ones that came with the car originally.  Even original bumpers from another car, same year, can have fit issues.  I just had the rear bumpers rechromed this past summer by some guys in Texas who did a great job, and I'm in Connecticut.  I priced about 10 different people across the country and got prices of $200/piece-$350 apiece.  I ended up paying $250 per bumper.  Well worth it.  But I first ordered a pair of original bumpers from another 70 from paragon which looked good but one side did not fit correctly.  So I had to send them back and pay 20% restocking feeCensored.  I don't have the guy's name on hand now but could find it if you would like.  Good luck.

I can vouch for Brian Haygood.  He is the best in the Houston area.  He does most of the Hot Rodders around here.

Thanks for all your posts guy's. I am sold on rechroming. Houston is a long ship from Michigan. I think I will get in touch with some of the hotrodders around here. I can get them done from a good place here although it will cost me around $900- $1000.00. I'll let you know what I find out. Terry
