Does anyone know how to test if the cowl fresh air flapper door is operating? I put juice to it and it works but what actuates it and how do you know if it is working going down the road. I was told it has something to do with accelerator pedal travel.
Any help would be appreciated.

i really dont know how it is activated..

but to see if it is working... you could run a wire from the door motor power leads to a peizo buzzer inside the car.. then when it activates youll hear it..

or even easier.. just run the wire up the windshield and dangle it off your mirror attach a light bulb.. this will let you know..

Im sure someone will have a graceful idea but if youve got a little redneck blood in you.. give my method a try.

as for activation..

do you have a th400 auto trans.. it could come on with the kickdown switch..

I just looked in my wiring diagram. There is a switch that controls it. The switch is shown inside the passenger compartment, so I'm guessing it is attached to the acellerator pedal. I can check this out when I get home. I have one.

The power supply is from the 10 amp gauges fuse pink/black wire that has a splice to a 18 gauge tan wire to the switch. A 18 gauge tan wire goes from the switch to the control in the hood. A black wire grounds it. All there is to it. Connect a test light or volt meter to the controller, turn on the key and trip the switch. You should get voltage.

The same switch that opens the door is the same switch that causes the trans to downshift. It is mounted to the backside of the accelerator pedal. To see if it is working properly I placed a small flashlight in the hood pointed toward the windshield. Then with the key in the on position but without starting the motor I pushed the pedal to the floor and I could see the light. If after doing that you can't see the light then look to see if the pedal shaft is hitting the switch. Push the pedal down with your hand and reach up and see if it is hitting the switch. It is not uncommon for the rod to bend a little over time or carpeting to keep the pedal from allowing it to hit. This can also make it so the carb doesn't make WOT position so check for that while you’re at it.

is the switch still there.. only doing the vent door..

Yes, both manual and auto trans still have the switch. There is a orange wire that goes to the auto trans and a brown wire that goes to the front of the car on the driver side and plugs to the wires going up the hood.
