I am self painting a 78 Sa. Question is how to layout the split in the upper silver 13 and the lower 07 color above the wheels. Straight lines should be matter of laying straight lines the correct distance above centerlinr per manual. Actually may paint 07 color 1/2" above center and use silver tape instead of dark tape above the silver 13 color @ 1/4" per manual.
With the primer on today looking for help tonight or in AM.
Thanks,
Bick

The AIM shows the measurements for over the wheel openings, too. Without looking, I believe it's 1 1/8"(I'll post later if that measurement's wrong). Basically, the paint break goes 1/4" above the center plane of the body, including 1/4" above the edge of the bumpers with the tape stripe bottom edge at center line.mkapp78792007-08-13 14:52:28

thanks,
Today went to hell. primer was not correct, evidently set air pressure was 60# instead of 45# so paint almost dry before hitting body. took all primer off today, resanded to 600 wet grit and possibly restart Wednesday. Silver attempt today was not working due to too much air pressure. Still learning. should of double checked!!
bought 1/4" stripping tape today to be able to round above the  wheels your measurement correct per AIM.
when understand "how to paint" !!!
duh!!!
Basic!!
Still learning by doing!
AIM still a little confusing, 15D sheet 17 shows layout for various places, however does not indicate color of the decal. If the silver 13 is 1/4" above the peak line , every place except the 1-1/8" at the wheel wells then the decal must be Metallic grey to match the lower color as shown in most pics of "original"  78 SA's. I should of took more pics of my original I ordered in Nov. 77 and delivered in March 78!

The AIM shows the paint layout setup for use with the tape stripes. They cover the paint break by 1/4" above and 1/4" below. The original  tape stripes are 2 tone, both silver and gray with the gray on the top and the silver on the bottom meant to cover the seam. If you are painting the stripes then you are correct in going a 1/2" above the center plane of the body. Why not try painting the upper silver, then laying out a 1/4" masking tape stripe at the center and then masking off the silver 1/4" above the tape stripe and spraying the gray over the masking tape stripe? That would give you the gray and the silver when you pull the tape off. Here's a pic that may show some stripe detail. I can take some stripe detail pics and email em. PM me and leave your email if you want.

I see what you are saying and appreciate the help. did not know the original stripe was two tone and that it covered the seam shown in AIM. Now it is making sense. I had though it would be easier to paint the top  first then the dark 07bottom color 1/2" above the center plane. and installing 1/4" Silver tape with the bottom edge on the center plane. With the luck I had painting, the past two days, my experience to paint the stripes may be above my ability. figured i could pull the silver stripping tape by 3M and do my best. A lot to this bodywork and painting! Thanks for the posting. That's your 78SA i assume. Looks good!
Again thanks for the help!
