LakotasRose,
You are the best person ( people ) to ask this since you just finished your "flairs" on Rose. The inside lower portion of my front pasenger side inside the wheel well has a chunk missing. It is about 5 inches long and the full width of the "flair" at the bottom. Did you use some type of form to create your flairs or did you do them layer by layer by hand? Any thoughts on how I can repair the fiberglass? Any help will be appreciated.

I dunno about being the BEST person to ask...but..will do my best!
All this fiberglassing stuff is ''NEW'' to me & Hubby and we BOTH learning as we go!
First off ...BUY the Fiberglass repair book from Ecklers!!!!!! THAT has been our ''life saver''!
I bought the flares already formed...but did have to cut off a good portion of the original flare and also make a ''groove'' for the new flare to be apoxied to. After that..there was also of layering to cover up what little ''ridge'' there was.( it was alittle more complicated than that., trying NOT to get on the soapbox here!
Can you take a picture of the ''damage'' and post it?? Kinda tough to visiualized what you are talking about. By the sounds of it..you will need more than just the ''Bondo-glass''...sounds like you will have to use the fiberglass matting to actually cover the ''hole'' first, then get into the more detailed layering and forming.
Hope this helps!

Next time I take the cover off the car, I will take a picture of the damage. It almost looks like the previous owner got something caught inside the well between the tire and the fender and just snapped off the inside of the fender. The piece that is missing is where you would hook up a mud flap to protect the side pipes. Of course by now you must realize how I found the damage. I never noticed it when I did the " pre-buy walk around ". It was more like a pre-buy run around and that is my fault, I should know better.
What is so special about Eckler's fiber glass repair kit?
Thanks.

Not the kit..the BOOK!!!! It is the ''Bible'' for those that are going to be doing ANY type of fiberglass work....got from fixing a tiny scratch to doing like I did....replacing body panels...detailed instructions and exactly what materials you need to do the job.

Ya know what they say....rain , rain , go away. Well, we are in a drought and I don't want the rain to go away just yet ( we have a well ). My vehicles all live outside. When I get a dry day, I will set up a work light and take a pic or three of the damage and get them posted. Really appreciate the willingness to help. So far everyone on this forum seems great.

Hi
Even that you didn't ask me, I will try to tell you how I fixed a similar damage on my 68.
If I understand you right, it's part of the inner fender lip missing.
I used alu tape ( 2 inch whide ) to act as a form and after cleaning and grinding edges to the damage, just put a few layers of fiberglass mats . The alu tape comes off easy, just don't wait till the fiberglass is completely cured.
You might have to rework your first layer already when it's dry, depending on how good your tape form was, but you will see that it builds up fairly easy.
I agree, the ECKLERS repair book is a good start if your a newby on fiberglass, but on the products, they use, it's very easy, only ECKLERS own products. ( what else ? )
I also fix up stress cracks from underneath by grinding a V-shaped cut and laying fiberglass mats , if I can get access to the underside.
This mainly in order to stop them from progressing without harming the paint job.
Seems to work somehow.
By the way, you don't have to use ECKLERS stuff, many other fiberglass resins are OK.

Ok Gunther. Some GREAT ideas. I guess I gotta get out the credit card and dial Ecklers. They are not the cheapest game in town but they do have good stuff.
Thanks everyone.
