Bumper Gaps

Gents,
I'm installing front and rear tru-flex bumpers.  They need a bit more massaging then I had imagined, but I think they will look great when finished.  I was wondering if any one can reccomend what size gap there should be between the new bumper flanges and the car body flanges?  I was thinking if the fit is too tight that the paint may chip or crack when I bolt the bumpers on after painting.  Is there a minimum gap, or any procedure that I should adhere to while prepping the fit?  Thanks!

I installed the tru-fit front bumper on my 74 and like you I also had to do filing and sanding to achieve a good fit. I made my bumper fit as close as possible, which in some areas was not terribly close. Have not had any problems with paint chipping at all. I fully installed the bumper prior to painting to avoid doing any damage to the paint in the install process. It involves a little more coverage of the car and a little extra cleanup but in the long run I think its the way to go...imho.

Thanks, I had hoped someone had been there done that before.  It is taking some time, but I will get this thing spot on.

Tony, I did the rear of my 74 with a flex-fit. There is no gap, tight right to the body. I pulled it out into the hot sun and it seemed to get a tad more flexible. Got a great fit on it. I got an OEM urethane for the front and frankly, it's been more of a pia than the flex-fit. I have not had any problem with paint chip on the body. Haven't painted the bumper yet. Full body paint job due toward Fall.  Good luck.
