a while back someone was asking about a body dolly...

I had found plans for a C2 but saw a site

http://www.69vetteman.com were a guy said he had to modify it to fit a C3.. I emailed him and got his diagram for the body dolly..

it is about .5" narrower and about 2.5" longer over all

I made mine over a weekend. I just took basic measurements while the body was still on, then fine tuned it while the body dangled above. The dolly is the way to go! A lot of guys just use an old frame, but that won't let you get to a lot of places that need attention.
I made mine out of a thin wall tube, used a smaller tube for the long rails so I could slide it apart.

well could you give it measure and tell me if the one i linked to is correct.. you and I should have just about the same dimensions..

I have about 500 board feet of 2x4/6 laying around.. so mine will be wood..

by the way.. how did you do your lift ?? straps ? four linebackers and a 30 pack ?

I used a body lift that a friend made. Basically a tube steel frame and straps. We used the door hinges and strike bolts as pick points. Lifted it with an engine hoist and had plenty of clearance.
I'll check my dolly dimensions for you, our cars should be identical for mount placement.

I looked at your dolly diagram, it appears to only catch mounts 1,2,&3. This normally supports a body, but you said your rocker channels were bad. The mounts go through the channels, so to repair or replace them the body will have to be lifted from the dolly long enough to r/r the channels.

OK, the way this is looking this dolly picks up your monts at the radiator support, the next is the firewall, then the mounts just forward of the rear wheel. it leaves the rearmost portion of the body unsupported. The 4'8" dimension looks a bit long.

I did plan to add some rear supports.. ill measure my car and see if i can come up with any improvements on this design

my measurement confirm the 4'8"... do I really need to support the back.. no dolly I have seen does so..

You're right, most dollys don't support the rear, I suppose it's personal preference to me. You will get a bit of sag without it, especially if the doors are off.
Side benefit is you can then feel comfortable working in the rear compartment.

I can see why they dont add the support.. they have to avoid the storage boxes..

Ill probably pull without the rear supports and use jackstands to hold it up...

maybe when its off i can rig something up..

one other change.. I bought locking casters..
