Help!!
This weekend I'm goin to make the attempt to buff out some of the marks in the paint. Now, what I have at the house in my treasure chest, is one of those walmart orbital buffers, Now question is, will this take out the marks with a polishing compound?

What exactly do you have in terms of polishing compound. If it's meant to cut the paint at all, it's going to do a lot more than remove wash marks.LukesVette 2007-03-30 04:50:25

mquers scratch x also some turtlewax polishing compound, any suggestions?

BE careful using any type of "compound". It is designed to remove paint. You have to be really careful using it, or you'll wind up with burnt spots, or even going thru the paint.
I would recommend a three stage(clean/polish/wax) paint cleaning "system". I have used the stuff from Mequires with excellent results. Just follow the directions to the "T".

I can do that. We'll see what kind of detailer? scratch remover? messer upper? that I am.

Experiment on the wifes car before moving onto the Vette!!! 
Meguiars is what I use also. You'd also be surprised at what you can get out by hand!! Be bareful with the machine.

Put down the buffer and step AWAY from the vehicle. Do this, get the Meguires 3 stage kit, cleaner/polish/wax and clay the car before any of this. I think you'll be amazed at what you accomplish. Check out the Griots cat, they have 3 different levels of scratch removal.... DO THIS BY HAND. Buffing with a machine using a compound/removal liquid is for PROS ONLY
Get exactly what Kebo recommends, you won't be sorry !
As for the Orbital, I use mine all the time and it saves me a lot of work and gives me excellent results.
Just don't use any abrasive's of any kind !
All wax manufactures have instructions on their cans, bottles etc. that tells you if you can use a buffer or not, and how to use it. Take your time, let us know how you make out.
Absolutely use the Meguiars 3 step and get someone else (read Tom Sawyer) to wax on - wax off. This is a real character builder.
One thing it will do for you, you will come to know every inch of your car very well.
DO NOT use any mechanical/electrical assistant. use only the hand and good quality, CLEAN polising pads/cloths. Raid the linen closet for towels to remove the wax (preferrably those washed without fabric softener).
Take your time and KEEP IT IN THE SHADE! You don't want the stuff to dry hard before you can get it off the car. Work a section at a time that you are comfortable with being able to cover an remove in a timely fashion.

I wouldn't use an orbital buffer. I do all my cleaning and polishing by hand. I think all you really need is a good ClayBar treatment. Mequire's has a very good product line thats all I use.

Start with the claybar with a liquid quick detail spray for lubricant.
Then I apply Mequires Swirl Remover #9.
And then finish it off with Mequires New Car Glaze #5
