I found a pile of charcol under my car when I pulled out of the garage, what would cause the canister to lose its load? What is the effect on the engine ? and what do I need to do to replace ?

This sounds like a good one for Joel. But I'd put a newspaper on the garage floor till it's potty trained!!!
Sounds like the can rusted out and needs replaced.

Scott, with your current set-up, I think I'd just remove the canister all-together. It's prolly not doing anything but poopin on your floor anyway. It's main purpose is to filter fuel vapors, and hold them in the canister to be sucked back into the intake upon starting.
If you wish to keep it, you'll have to replace the canister. It's not re-loadable, as far as I know.
So...I assume you got that thing running again? How's it doing?

Thanks I guess I'll just disconnect it. Do I have to block off any lines? I have never really investigated the canister, do not know what is connected.
I blew two pistons, took them all out in my garage. No damage to the cyl walls. replaced all the rod bearings and threw it back together, it actually runs. Whadda Ya know !
If I want the engine to run a little cooler should I advance the timing a little? When I first put everything back together I guess I had the timing too far retarded because the headers actually started to glow, scary stuff.

Good morning! Beautiful day on this Indy 500 Sunday in Central Indiana. I first started messing with the charcoal canister on our '78 pace car when I was getting fuel fumes in garage after we'd been out and about with the car. I believe there are 5 different lines running to the can.
After getting some suggestions from others I ended up changing the canister, all vacuum lines running to the engine and a piece connecting to the fuel tank line. I also changed the gas cap. I think the primary issue was cracking of the rubber hoses due to age. No more gas fumes!
I think someone said at one time that you could change the charcoal in the can, but don't believe that this is possible. I may be wrong on this.

My can fell on the headers and it burnt a hole in the side, charcol all gone as well as one hose nipple broke. I want to bypass canister, how do I do this? Do the lines coming off the tank have to be vented?

I don't have the C-Can in mine anymore. It was one of those unnecessary items under the hood once you start spending too much time at the Speed Shop.
I just plugged the line and have never noticed any ill effects.

You need to plug the vacuum lines at the motor. One line attaches to the PVC Valve the other attaches to the base of the carb.

If you plug the tank line you will need to get a vent gas cap.
