Vette(s): 1973 coupe Under Construction
I am in the process of attempting to pit the doors on my '73 coupe and am having problems with the front of the passenger door.  It seems that unless I get the gap ridiculously huge the door binds in two spots.  I know this is a prettey common problem, since Ive seen cars with the paint chipped off there before.

Are there any tricks to getting this to fit right?  My next plan is to try to shift the hinge further towards the back of the car.

Define "ridiculously huge."  How much of a gap do you have?  Did you remove the hinges from the car when the doors were removed?  Did you mark their locations?  Is the driver's side giving you the same problem?

I'm wondering whether the problem might be the fender and not the door.

3/4"   gaps.  The doors were already off of the car when I got it.  The drivers side fits much better.  The fender itself has some issues.  The top corner had to be repaired, and will end up having whatever gaps I sand them to and not have any binding.

It sound like your car has had some repairs in that area.  Before doing anything, make sure the car is sitting squarely on the floor, or is on equal-height jackstands under the suspension.

To do it right, start by fitting the door to the rest of the door opening, at the bottom and rear.  Especially where the top rear of the door meets the rear quarter (so it looks right).  Then check fender fit.  If it otherwise seems OK, add however much fiberglass to the fender as you need to to get the gaps right.  There are shims between the hinge and the body that can be added or removed to get the right in/out alignment.

Take your time and be prepared to put some money in the "cuss" jar.

Better make that a 5 gallon can!!!!

Fitting doors is prolly the hardest thing to do on a Vette, especially if someone else started the project. You need to make sure that your body mounts are in good condition, and shimmed properly. This will effect door fit.
If the huge gap is consistent from top to bottom, then I'd have to guess a hinge issue, or the fender is just not installed/repaired right.
Does the door fit flush with the fender, as far as in/out goes? Or does it sit out farther at the top or bottom?

I ain't much for bodywork....just ain't got the patience to do that kind of stuff anymore...but I am full of ideas!

I agree.  Definitely worth a look-see.
