Good afternoon ALL,
I am having to replace the drivers side door glass, (and a b$%$ load of other things) on my 81. Other than all the horror stories that I have run across, has anyone had any luck as a "do-it-yourselfer" in this area?
ANY AND ALL ADVICE WELCOMED!

I have removed my 75s a few times its not as bad as removing a window regulator. A GM repair manual or AIM (GM assembly line manaul) are great for this. You may only have to remove the door panel. Then remove the top window stops. After that roll the window all the way up and aline the bolts that secure the window to the rail and remove them. Window should slip right up out of the channnels. 81 maybe different than my75, hope this helps.

Be extremely careful. Door glasses are heavier than they ought to be regardless of the fact the 80-82 glass is supposed to be lighter than the older cars. The door shell is stamped steel and has sharp edges around the punched openings. If that door glass falls, you could seriously damage a finger.

AIM and GM service manaul are pretty much musts for this job.
This might help. Shows door innards with door skin removed. View won't be quite as clear working from the other side of the door.

I agree that the factory service manual will be the best resource for this project followed by the assembly manual. Ive adjusted my windows but never had to remove them and the service manual was fantastic help.
