The "S" shaped door hinge spring broke on the drivers door. How hard is it to replace? Do I need that special tool they show in the catalogs to replace it, or just to remove it. The spring broke and I took it out. It looks like a tricky procedure to get in. I wonder if the local Chevy dealer stocks them? It's Sunday, and they are closed.
Thanks for any help.

You can do it with out buying a special tool. Just take a cheap screwdriver heat it up with a torch and bend it a little. You need to do this for leverage. put the top of the spring in first,as far as it will go, then you have to twist the bottom over till it aligns up with the hinge and take a small hammer and pound it up so it locks in to place. It's a bear but it can be done. Good luck

If it's not painted, Chrome it!!!

Thanks for the advice. I am going to call the Chevy dealer tomorrow, to see if they stock them. I think I saw one on line at Napa. If not I guess I will have to order one from one of the catalogs.
Thanks again for the help.

I have a spare one if you can't find one, Ecklers or Mid-America should have one. I chromed my hinges and spring so when one brakes I have to send it off and get it chromed again which don't do the spring steel any good. Makes it brittle.

Thanks for the offer. Mid America, and Ecklers have them, but I hope I can get one sooner. I am off the next few days, and want to get it done asap. I am going to make some calls tomorrow.
Your car looks great.
Thanks again.

Your are right. I ordered 2 from Ecklers. Chevy dealer and parts stores do not carry them.
I see you are from Binghamton. I moved from Rome, NY to Arizona 32 years ago. We go back to Syracuse every so often to visit family.
How do you insert a picture of your car in the E-mail?
Thanks

I replaced the driver's side spring without any special tools, just a long handled screw-driver and a hammer. It took a couple of trys before I figured out exactly what needed to happen, but overall wasn't too difficult. Removing it might be a different matter, but I don't plan on ever doing that.

Thanks for the links. I just printed them out. I'll have to try to insert a picture.
At least the spring broke, and it came out easy. I agree, I wouldn't want to take one out that was still in one piece.
