I can't get into the car. I have to reach in and use the inside latch. I'm sure somebody has been there at one time. Will I get any help by using my shop manual and or my assembly manual. A lot of that stuff in my shop manual is geared to people that do this kind of work for a living. Please if anybody knows how to fix this, tell me how it's done. I pretty much figure I'll have to remove the door panel but thats about all I know about it.

It is more than likely that the plastic keeper on the end of the linkage has parted company allowimg the linkage to disengage from the handle. You need to remove the door panel and look inside the door for for the hanging linkage. Several of the Corvette suppliers have good instructions and illustrations on their websites.
Good luck,
Scott

Scott is most likely correct, in that the clip has broken, and fallen down into the bottomless black hole at the bottom of the door. Remove the door panel, and take a strong light to look in there, while moving the outside door flapper. If nothing but the flapper moves, look for a loose piece of sqwiggly, round, linkage. Of course, if you find the clip broken, you'll need to replace it. Somewhere between the flapper, and the door latch/catch you'll find something flopping around. The service manual may not have much info on it, but the AIM will have detailed drawings of how all of that stuff goes together...hth

Only one word of advise here. If, in the unlikely event, it is necessary to replace the latch mechanism.....buy a GM replacement part $$$OUCH, or find a servicable used one. I just replaced my passengers side with a reproduction and I AINT HAPPY WITH THE WAY IT FITS. It works fine, but not happy with the way it fits and cant be adjusted to align the door perfectly with the body lines when fully closed even with the striker moved to the limit of it's travel. This was an emergency repair so I needed something fast. This winter, I plan to replace the new reproduction with a used original when I can find one at a decent price.
Oh great. I just new it was going to be a hard to find part. I need to look in all my parts in my stockroom. I might have one. What I'll have to do is take BOTH door panels off so I can see how it's supposed to look like so I might as well replace both of them. After that you know the routine....Body Off time..................................

From your description, I agree with the others, probably just a retaining clip slipped off, not a big deal and not difficult to figure out how the linkage attaches, it's just aggrivating to do. I doubt seriously that you will have to replace the latch itself. A pair of the looooooooooonnnnnnnnnggg nosed forceps available at lots of tool stores will be helpful. Oh, and working with the linkage in cramped spaces usually involves the use of lots of blue language as well
