Comments from 3 Jims in a row - must be a good omen!! The masking was very tedious - spent half a day doing all of it...well worth the results and getting the door jambs done right. A good painter can get the jambs painted pretty decently when they are all the way open.
Jersey Jim, I had the flounder blues the same day that we went fishing!!!

Really sweet job, Paul!
Thanks for posting the pics. Some day I dream of painting my car, but can't afford it now, so I'm just driving her around "ugly."
Mechanically, she's good and kept up.....

Hi Paul,
I have really enjoyed and taken an interest in your project of painting Lukesvette Targa Blue. (Love the color)
Sorry this reply is a little late but I have been out of touch lately. (Went to the Indy 500 then spent a week on a lake in Southern Ill away from computers.)
The pictures were great and I have a few questions. Did you replace the weather stripping?
Did you have to rebond the seams on the fenders?
My 72 has a rippling efect in front between the bumper and headlights. I assume this is from the rivits that hold the metal strip under there. Did you have the same issue?
Did you use a chemical to strip the paint? I have heard of a citris chemical that does not damage the fiberglas.
I have been following, on another forum, the repainting of a 72 back to Steel Cities Gray and they used this citris chemical. Does anyone else have info on this? Looks like a very painful process.
I would like to paint mine, but it is going to take a lot of fiberglas work. Besides they've got this recession thing going on. Maybe in a few years.
It looks like your project went very well and very quickly. Congratulations on a job well done. I know you will love the color.
Dean

Dean,
Thanks and glad you got something out of the pictures. In no particular order:
Weatherstripping was only about 4 years old so we carefully masked it off.
Fender bonding was in very good shape.
No ripples by the headlights but some on the sides where the fenders bonded to the cowl. Filled and smoothed.
As for stripping, this car had a very bad repaint with one exception - the adhesion was so great that we decided to treat this as a sort of high build primer layer. Once all filling work was done, we sealed it with 2 coats of black epoxy sealer. Basically since there was no checking/alligatoring in the original and second coats of paint, we decided to just sand the orange peel smooth. It worked out great.
I helped with bodywork on 2 cars that were stripped with wlanut shells - amazing results but a tremendous mess.
As for the color, my wife is officially wierded out seeing me stare at it silently on the garage with a smile on my face!!! Lovin it!!!
