Zinc creates a coating that will react if it gets exposed. If the paint gets scratched, the zinc is exposed and reacts to the elements. When this happens, it forms a new compound, which in itself creates a new protective layer. This layer is as corrosion resistant as the paint, if not better.
It's called a sacrificial coating. It sacrifices itself to protect the surface below. Very good stuff.

As far as the lubes, I think I'll leave that to Ken also. The anti-sieze I use is NAPA's house brand. I don't know that much about the poly ste-ups. I've heard some complaints about them being squeaky though. Any truth to that?

yeah poly can be very squeaky.. I have just used "brand x" bushing lube in the past.. if any at all.. "who cares if the car squeaks as long as it goes fast and gets $hitty gas mileage" was my motto.... but now im going for the best..
I have been using the etching green zinc on frame. Goes on nice, and for frame, I am using semi-gloss Rustoleum.
Took frame areas to paint down to bare metal. Sprayed the finish right over the green, looks great.
I am using dual filtered mask for spraying everything.
Just an amateur here, but learn from everyone else.

where can i get etching green zinc ?
The self etching green zinc primer is great stuff. Any supply house that has body supplies should carry it.
There is a special lube made for the bushings, but the antisieze works well, and is what I use for many things. A good graphite may be the choice for the bushings, but the special stuff would work best in this case.
And Ben, at least I'm a geek with gas! (Okay maybe I should not say it that way) And I'm not a regular manual geek. Many would miss the geek part. But with cars, guess I'm an autogeek. Many just call me the car guy.

you forgot to include king of the pun !!

Green zinc primer: I go to the auto paint store that supply's the local body shops. They did a great job with the computer eye matching the silver on my 79.
