oh believe me... ill check prices..

this sounds like the best of both worlds that you described, self etching AND zinc..

I looked for this green primer that was both self etching and contained zinc chromate. I couldnt find it.

du ponts "green" primer is zinc free.

does anyone know the part number/manufacturer for this stuff..

btw..

I think I used about 2 quarts of primer and every bit of a gallon of topcoat.
For metal parts, I've gotten zinc primers at the local hardware store. Maybe Boatman can tell us what brand he used.
I used Sikens, very light coat of etching, followed by medium wet coat of primer, then just started pounding color on it.

Using the green zinc chromate etching primer, top coat goes on right after drying, I wait 24 hours. I will get the name of company later, out in shop.
I take areas I am finishing down to bare metal, but I am not treating the metal before coating. Works out fine.

I am going to start using Eastwood for supply's. I am sure you guy's have heard of them, they are totally into old car restoration, and have pioneered a lot of product that we use. www.eastwood.com They also sell kits to zinc plate all nuts and bolts to factory finish, kits for metal blackening. Get one of their catalogs.
I sent Chutulu the DuPont site, for info on their DTM line of paint/primer applications over metal.
As far as nuts and bolts go, I do not buy new unless I have to. I use a wire wheel to take all rust and contaminents off, then prime, paint. With the Eastwood cadmium plating and blackening kits, looks like I can get pure factory finish on the old pieces.
You can also get "Gold Cad", paint from them to put the original factory finish on brake boosters, etc. They have blue/gray zinc coating for coil brackets, vacuum advance canisters, alternator fans, disc brake dust shields, etc. They have zinc phosphate for use on center links, outer tie rod ends, sway bars, etc.

after looking at price vs product comparing eastwood, por-15, and dupont primer..

I decided to follow boatmans advice and use eastwoods rust encapsulator primer..

got a gallon for 104$ shipped.. the primer was going to be 60$ for a quart..

and por-15 vs eastwood was about the same .. except I found two articles claims eastwoods product was better..

I've heard about Eastwood is a good product, just never used it. Looking forward to hearing another opinion! I still have a couple of non-vette rust buckets to do.

I am still planning on using the urethane paint you suggested.. but when I asked them about a flex agent they looked at me like I was hitting the crack pipe..

also they told me the urethane paint comes in four parts that you have mix in a 8:2:2:1 ratio...

am I confused or are they??

Some of the new paints use what seems to be a very odd combinations of components. They work very well with HVLP spray equipment. You'll get used to it.
