What years have the shock in the square tube in the back of the frame for the bumper, mine is a 78 someone said a 74 frame would work.

As near as I can tell, 75-79 frames will interchange, and 69-74 frames will interchange. It's entirely possible you could modify a 74 frame to work for you, but I could not guarantee it.

Here is a list of minor changes in the Vette frame from 1963-1982. maybe this will answer your question:

1963 - Frame introduced.
1964 - Small triangular gussets added to the kickup area for strength.
1964 - Indent added into the engine crossmember to clear larger pulleys.
1968 - Changes rearward of the kickup.
1968 - Extra gussets added in the kickup area on convertibles.
1969 - Extra gussets added in the kickup area on all cars.
1973 - No major frame change but front end bumper brackets changed.
1974 - No major frame change but rear end bumper brackets changed.
1978 - Gas tank support crossmember changed.
1980 - Carrier support crossmember changed.
