Vette(s): Just finished 2 years of Blood, Sweat, & Tears restoring my 69 Coupe. Crimsom Red, 427, vacuum removed, Shot of Steeroids, Killer Lights, 5 Speed, still working on small things but she is back on the road.
As I stated a few weeks ago I decided to just completely remove the front Cap and exchange it. Now I have a few questions hopefully, some of you that have done this procedure before can help me. The new replacement is off some places big, others small, and some who knows in various sections of the Cap. I was wondering can anyone tell me how did you measure to make sure you have the front end allyned correctly so the hood will match before you cut or added to the end that matches up with the doors and fire wall. I think I have it close. The hood sets on top of the cushion of the Rad mount but before I start cutting and adding any more I want to make sure it is the right height.

I really wish I had taken more pictures of the front end before I dismantled it. I would like to see the height clearence from the top of the Rad support in reference to the top of the fenders. The nose of the car has the tendancy to dip down. I have it jacked up to what I think is the correct height and the front bumper allyns with the Cap. However, I still question do I have it high enough based on the relationship of the top of the Rad support and the top of the fender. Any help you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated.

The inner fenders and the radiator support should get the proper mounting height very close. I would recommend a "dry" assembly and put the hood in place. If the nose is too low the hood will be higher than the surround panel, too high and it won't fit right along the fenders.
First and foremost, you want the car sitting "dead level", floor must be flat and all 4 tires the same size with the same pressure in them or equal height jack stands on a flat floor.
Not sure if I helped, but I'd really go for a test fit regardless of the numbers.
Also, at the doors, you have some adjustment, but everything needs to be done at the same time, make sure you have good pins and bushings in the door hinges and the doors fit properly at the rear of the door.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have it perfectly level on the floor with jack stands. So I know I have the frame level to the ground correctly. The doors are allyned properly and they fit great to the back of the car and swing evenly. So I think all my work from the door back is OK. I have the Cap sitting on the car and have made some minor adjustments to prevent the back of the Cap from over lapping the doors. I know I have to take some more off but it will depend how much as the front is lowered or raised. I have the front bumper and all the supports mounted to the frame or the associated HW. The hood is laying flat on the car and is resting on top of the cushion that is glued to the top of the Rad Support that looks good as well. But when I eye ball the top of the Rad support to the top of the fenders the Rad support looks as if it is sitting higher than the fenders. This may be Ok I just don't have a picture or something to compare it too to determine if it is correct. The hood overall sits fairly even a touch here or there will be needed to make all the lines match up but not much. I really can't mount the hood because I can't mount the inter fender wheel wells until I know the Cap is on correctly. I know I'm rambling but I want to get this right before I glass it on and then later have to take it off again.

Sounds like you're doing everything right. I'm not sure about the radiator support height question though. I'd suggest trying to find an unhit car similar to yours and take a good look at the support area.
If yours is a small block, look at small block cars and vice versa. Mines a big block but I'd be glad to send some pics. Somebody else on here could do the same.

Thanks Dave for taking the time and effort to send them. They did help but I was also lucky. I was at Ecklers Friday afternoon and they had a couple 69s in their new restoration shop. I got to take a close look and I decided I have everything lined up pretty close. I finished mounting all the bumpers, headlights and everything else that hooks to the front to make sure it was all lined up. I plan to glass it all together tomorrow night after work. |hammer|
