About a month ago, MKapp7879 was asking about an additional spoiler piece attached to the factory spoiler on front of his 78 L-82. My 79 L-82 has this, and I replaced it, luckily I kept the original.
Front spoiler, (air dam), from Eckelers is paper thin, and very flimsy. I need to throw it away or send it back.
Questions: Can I find the original type anywhere, that is more sturdy, and what about the added riveted pieces on the bottom? They avaliable ? Look something like the 1980 2 piece spoiler, just attached to the stock unit.
Thanks

Boatman, I have only seen a few of these air dams actually on 79 Corvettes. Mine is on my 79, but not on my 78's. I believe this setup to be a late 79 L82 thing. I have never seen these or the rubber parts in any catalogues or at any swap meets. Best bet is to try to find a NOS stock spoiler on ebay(I've seen them occasionaly, $70 to $80) and attach your rubber. Does your 79 have the trap door in the shroud bottom with an electric fan? 4 speed? Late year production? Mike
Boatman, theres a GM front air dam on ebay right now. I'm a computer idiot so all I can tell you is go to ebay and type in "Corvette spoiler". About 5 days left, no bids yet at $69. Mike PS. I don't think the GM part is all that durable either.
Thanks for the info, and I will go to e bay on the spoiler.
There is a flap on the bottom, and an electric fan. The electric fan is about as wide as the radiator. My thinking was a HD cooling system option. Have not found any build sheet and don't know if I will, I checked all the right places.
I will check production number out of total made.
Thanks for info.

OK, the last answer I received from D A B, said that he was told that all L-82's are supposed to have this extra rubber added on. Mine is riveted.
This add-on, really puts the spoiler down in the weeds, making it have much more mass than a 1980 L-82.
Why is this ? Does the L-82 have to push that much air out of the way? Keep the engine temp up ? Could not be aerodynamics. Any L-48's have this ?
Last answer said his 77 L-82 has it.

I have/had that rubber air dam on my '79...which BTW has a L-48.
I still have it but it is NOT in the best of condition.
I put on a '78 PC spoiler a couple of years ago.

I am pretty sure the front spoiler with the rubber extensions is factory only on the 79 L82/air conditioned Vettes. The 79 GM Restoration Package shows that the L82/AC cars were equipted with a 7 blade motor driven fan and also the electric fan which likely included the trapdoor shroud and I assume the extensions. The 78 Package makes no reference to any electric fan. I believe the electric fan and shroud were carried over to the 80 L82/AC cars which had so much better air flow that it didn't need any more spoiler than was allready standard. I've read some responses of other years with the rubber extensions but could they be dealer installed or replacement spoilers from way back when you could still find them? They do add a little LOOK to the front end. And what other C3's were equipted with a factory electric fan? I know they became standard with the C4. This has been my little pet project, finding out what the deal is with these fans and shrouds (I don't really know why!), but since joining the Registry I'm finally starting to get answers! Thanks all. Mike
