I am getting ready to paint my Vette. Having a shop paint it that is family owned. They all have or do own Vettes. So I am fairly confident it will be done right. The owner talked me out of the big rear flares saying it might take away from the resale value. Still going with the L88 hood, got to have it. I love the look and will probably need the room under the hood in the future.
Anyway still trying to decide on what color of Red to use. I went to the showroom and saw the Crystal Red Tint Coat on a 2008. Does anybody here have an opinion on this color?
I have contacted a few members about the color of their car. This is my chance to personalize my Vette. Anybody have any trick paint job suggestions? Without going way over my budget.

Vette(s): SOLD - "The Toy" - '70 Convertible
SOLD - "The Beast" - '90 ZR-1 (#682)
SOLD - "Betty" - '28 Ford Model A Tudor
Sold - "BLKBRRD" - '78 Pontiac Trans Am
"BLUBYU" - '04 Coupe
Several Vette folks have commented that when the time comes I should repaint "The Toy" in Torch Red (the current Monza Red has a little too much orange in it for my liking).  While I like a bright red I also like it to have some depth, which most of the 'straight' colors do not have IMO.

So for me I'd need a color with some metal-flake in it.  The Magnetic Red Metalic and Anniversary (Ruby) Red Metalic from the C5 palates are nice and mellow yet have some real depth to them.  Have also seen some custom Candy Apple and Brandywine reds that are spectacular.  And an all-time favorite of mine is the dark, menacing Black Rose.  When done right that color looks like it is a foot thick.

Norsky-
Thanks for the input. I also like the bright red. Except I am looking for a deep looking color. The painter told me he really does not want to do a candy or pearl. He says it would be harder to match on touch ups and repainting in spots. I guess this could save me money in the future.
He said any stock factory color would be fine. That is why I am seriously considering the 2008 Crystal Red Metallic Tintcoat. It is offered on Corvettes and Cadillacs. I think the clear coat is tinted which helps with the depth. The Vette in the showroom looked pretty good even under the fluorescent lights.
I have the Ruby Red Metallic on my 2007 Colorado, nice color when it is in direct sunlight. I think both of these colors are 2 stage.
I had considered trying to paint it myself, but the painter is going to realign the front end ( wasn't put together right when the previous owner put a new front clip on). The shop seems to be cutting me a good price or deal. I have a month before he will take the car and another month he wants to paint it.
My wife thinks I have paint and color on the brain.

Reds are hard to figure out. Some that look good in the sun look bad in parking lot lights after dark. Mine is the Mili Miglia Red from the 70's and it looks real orange at night. I like the red that Terry (my7T1) painted his 71.

If there is one thing that is highly personal, it is color.
You really have to pick the color you love and forget about everyone else.
This is not something you are going to chage next year if you don't love it.

Look at real cars in daylight.

Don't worry about what they look like at night.

If it is going to be a driver, I agree, stay away from the metalflake and pearl (although when done right, they are beautiful and have depth).

Good luck and take your time on this decision.

I seen a red candy over a silver metalflake on this car and it looked really good! I don't know squat about paint but it looked pretty cool to me.  http://picasaweb.google.com/minnickjason/OneGoodOneBad/photo#5146562510244192114

Mine is pearl white the paint is pretty trashed, but it does get a purple'ish almost mother of pearl look to it at night under lights. I kind of dig it.

Mine has a LITTLE gold pearl in the base coat, according to the paint formula. It looks it's best in the bright sunlight, around noon to 1pm...awesome! Any other time, it just doesn't look the same. It shows best outdoors...at some of the indoor competitions, it don't do so well... The 50th Anniv paint is almost the exact same hue as my car, except the 50th has actual glass beads in it...
The '72 drag car we had was custom Candy red over silver metallic...it looked good all the time, regardless of the lighting. Go figure!

The nice thing about painting your car is that you can't be wrong.  Pick the color you like.  I like the colors Norsky mentioned, but it is not my car.

Once all the prep work is done and it is painted, it wouldn't cost very much to just scuff and squirt another color if you change your mind.

I had a candy brandywine on my '62, which was sharp. It looked dark ruby at night. Here's a link to a C3 that's painted the same color:

Hey Gene. The color of my 71 Brian was referring to is BASF #567 base clear. BASF really has no name for their finishes just numbers. Its hard to tell from a picture, but I just posted my project on Car Domain today. I REALLY like the color during the day and at night. I suggest get a whole bunch of samples sprayed on a good size piece of white plastic and go for it!! TerryM
