Took the vette to local meeting this past Thursday and noticed an aggrivating rattle behind passenger seat -Cry rear wheel, shock ,etc.  Recently pulled entire exhaust system to do something under the unit, wrenched it back tight and checked last night.  Exhaust appears fine.  I am wondering how you guys might go about checking individual components.

Jack car off ground first to check wheels, etc.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,  gurtz Cry

Thanks for the reply Jim, didn't think about that.

Got a bigger problem!  Rootin' around under there with shoplight a little bit ago and noticed leak at differential/chunk/ or what I think was referred to as the pumpkin' in previous threads months ago.

Is that something that should be sent out to a shop?  I have never owned a Vette till now and I am stupid enough to try anything once, but if it is a major undertaking, I would prefer to send it off.

Thanks,  Rick

If you can get it jacked up and supported on jack stands, or pull it up on ramps from the rear, or get it on a lift, you can check around and see where the leak is coming from.  If it is the front seal, the seal where the driveshaft goes into the pumpkin from the front, this is relatively easy to change out.  If it is leaking at the side where the half shafts go in, it isn't as easy.  Also check for any damage to the case.

The first thing is to determine where the leak is coming from and it should be fairly easy to do if you can get under there with a light.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES crawl under the car supported by a jack alone!!!

Fluid doesn't usually run up hill, so follow the flow lines on the pumpkin to the highest point and that should indicate the leak area.

Good Luck!

I pulled my diff and shipped it off for rebuild.  Not too big of a job to get out.  Had it back in about a week.  Shipping a bit costly thoughCry!!  Good luck!!

Hey gurtz,  I've got the exact same problems withe mine right now.  Both that irritating rattle/squeek in the back somewhere on passenger side and,  leaking diff. .  I don't have a jack in there right now so its not that,  but Jims right.  thats a good place to look.   My diff is leacking out the rigtht half shaft seal.  It seems our cars are on the same repair schedule.   If I find out where my noise is coming from I'll let you know.  Who knows,  being's they're both  '81's ,  it might be the same problem.

Appreciate the replies.  It is the 1/2 saft passenger side that is leaking.

Karmell77, where did you send your off to?  And to they do gear change outs?

deeboy59, likewise.  Once I find out what mine is, I will let you know.

Thanks,
