I did mine and I was able to get them out without taking the hood off. (80) I jacked up the front and was able to get all the sprinfs and bolts off from the front. Unscrew the clevas rod counting the turns. Then reached through and with a little manuvering was able to bring them out. Tape around your hood to avoid scratches . If you Counted the number of turns when you took the clevas off , you will be about where you were when you reinstall. Good luck.   Try this LINK

I rebuilt mine, but wasn't satisfied with the results, replaced them with new ones I got off Ebay,I unbolt them and dropped them down through the bottom,it takes a little wigglin, but no scratches on the edge of the hood,if you take the valance panel off it's easierThumbs%20Up

Vette(s): 1980 L-48 still in the middle of a frame-off.
I recommend a frame-off just so you have more room to play around with.LOL

Actually the above advice is very enlightening (pun intended). I would change with new if they are original. Check your hoses too.

Corvettes and women are the same...You want to make love to them but they keep breaking down.

I was thinking of a frame off, not doing it myself but sending it to this guy http://www.newmancarcreations.com/about/index.html. What do ya think, looks like he does very nice work. Thanks for the link mbarney, looks pretty straight forward, I'll give it a shot when the parts get here. Smile

Vette(s): 1982,150K,Renegade CFI,Hooker Side Pipes,85 fuel pump,Bilsteins,HD suspension, Aluminum radiator, SharkBar/w 5-Point Restraints. 3:73 gears coming soon.
I did a complete rebuild of mine; springs, bushings, pins, boots etc. I went through the top - didn't think it would work from the bottom.... wish I knew that then.... I would not suggest taking them out from the top.... I actually have a small chip in the paint now - it kills me every time I look at that chip! But, the head lights work as new now....
Good Luck!
