This summer some one from this group pointed out to me, my car was missing the headlight shields....finnaly got them ordered, and was prepared to put them on last night. I found the holes in the steel where the holes in the shields line up to, but, seams like the only way to get them on is to put the U nuts on the shields and place the lip of the shields  OBOVE the steel brace and run the screw  up through the steel part and then into the u nuts holding the shield.....Correct?? Just seams a little weak, but, it is a not a heavy piece so maybe.........wow is that gonna cut down on airflo!!Confused

I just installed some on my 72 this weekend. I put the U-nuts over the hole in the body and put the shields up against them and ran the screws through the shield and through the nut. Mine went on very easy and they do make it look better.

I don't know if I explained that correctly? The u-nut slides over the hole in the body with the big hole on the bottom side of the body and the small hole of the u-nut on the top side of the body. Put shield up against it from below and put screw through shield then through u-nut. If your worried you can put some washers on the screws.

They do cut down on available airflow to the radiator, for sure...the biggest reason they were deleted after '72.
They were put on to keep the headlights clean while they were down, of all things...

If you are having any overheating issues, I'd recommend leaving them off. If you're doing the Judging thing, you can always install them for that.
just an opin...

No Not going to have this car judged anytime soon.....just wanted it as correct as I can possibly get it....sometimes $50 at a time. HOWEVER I held the shields up to the area they seam to bolt to and I am convinced that the shield lip must go on top of the metal bar......my shields have a rounded side that I can only assume goes to the outside of the car and therefore if you bolt it up to the metal bar it would be "SQUISHED DOWN" and if you bolted the shields to the top of the bar...it seams like it would form better...but you would have to use the u nuts on the shields and bolt up to it...seams unlikely but other than running the screw down....wich would require a lot of dissassembly....I dont see how else it would be done......NOT trying to overspeculate on a small issue.....I suspect I  can make them work either way, but, ONLY ONE WAY CAN BE RIGHT! Anybody wanna go look at there originals??!!??  Thanks E.M.

I always do just what you describe, not from being sure, but just because it is the only way that makes sense.  I put the U nuts on the shields, then run the screws up from below.
