Hey,

Finally uploaded picts and that made me think about the nasty hole under my battery....
any ideas on how to fix that? I figure clean it with some Simple Green and then a fiberglass patch kit, but I'm not sure, and I'm not too sure where I can get fiberglass either....I bet LakotasRose does..... =) |wink| there is another hole that is just out of the upper left corner of the pict that is also fairly substantial.

WALMART !!!|laugh|

the stuff is called ''Bondoglas''. It is in a blue can ...right next the the RED Can of regular Bondo. You can also get a Fiberglass repair kit...has everything you need in it...THAT might be the best way for you to go.
HINT...Wear plastic gloves when mixing up the glass!!! and THAT comes from experience!!

Wouldn't you be better off replacing the whole thing?

Either way, you should probably get one of these:
Battery Protection Mat

Scot,

The round hole at the top, was where the battery cable comes in the bat box to the positive side of the battery. The other hole, looks like some gremlin tried to eat his way into your vette. That must be the one that you were gigged on. My battery cable has a grommet on it that fits tight in the round hole. I believe that they marked you up because of exhaust gasses getting inside your vette. Very BAD|no-no| |no-no| You need to glass the big crack...
|cheers| |cheers|

There should be a round hole under the battery, also..for a drain..

Glen,
I realized what hole under the battery that was supposed to be there was when I removed the battery, the gremlin bite is going to be fixed asahp(tonight or tomorrow) really not sure if Simple Green will get the potential battery acid out or not tho.

Adam, How the heck do I replace that on a budget? looks like it requires removal of most of the car.

Scot,

It seems like you could buy a replacement battery box to install in place of your bad box. I'll look in the books I have to see if anyone sells them.

You can neutralize the acid that probably spilled in there by mixing a paste of baking soda and water and wiping it over the surfaces. Then rinse and wash with simple green to get rid of any oil or grease that might have gotten in there. Rough up the surface with 40 grit paper, and apply fiberglass resin & mat or cloth. Joe

Definitely neutralize any residual acid left over from the leakage... like people have been suggesting, some baking soda mixed in water, and just drop it in there, let it fizzle for a while. Of course, make sure you're in an open area... wash it out with water, dry it out... then go at it with Simple Green... After that's all done, get yourself a small fiberglass repair kit. It's really easy to use, but has some nasty toxic fumes! So get a mask, and make sure you're wearing gloves, it gets sticky in a hurry. When taking out my clutch, we ripped a big tear in the underbody and I thought it would take a couple of applications before I sealed it. But nope! First time did it... it was cheap too, something like $10 at the discount auto parts store. Even Walmart had it.

Good luck!

I know I have seen all three "boxes" for sale in one of the suppliers catalogs. I just can not remember which parts book. I would think the best best is to just replace the box with a known good item and not worry about neutralizing anything except your wallet.

Mid America carries the individual boxes pretty cheap apparently. If you have their catalog, it's on page 3-107. Their website is madirect.com. It was listed under Rear Compartment Trim.

One box is $52, $30, $35. That's just for the boxes, not the doors on top.

Good luck

I put down the bondo(after using the baking soda, the simple green, and the sandpaper) and it seems to be ok. Its at the shop now so I dunno...but I think it'll be ok and it will work out....OH!! how would I go about replacing it if I choose to do so later in the summer? the thing looks huge and I didn't see many fasteners.

..Well I just went out and looked at mine....there are TWO liners only ( I have a 3-compartment)..the RH side has a liner and the middle has one but there is NO liner for the battery side and the bucket itself is molded with the rest of the body...'bout the only thing you can do is really try and make a good job of fiberglassing it...then painting it to match your paint.

You can also get pigment to add to the fiberglass resin so that it will match the original factory glass color (if originality is a concern to you). Also, there was some black semi-flat overspray on the sides of the boxes from when they did the blackout in the wheel wells. The manner in which the overspray wasn't real uniform, so you can probably mist the repair with some black paint to hid any discoloration. I use John Deere Blitz Black for blackout and frame paint on my '70 - it has the 'correct' original sheen to it and is very good quality paint in a rattle can. |thumb|

Also, check what kind of battery came with your car originally... I know that in 1970 it was the style which you had to add water to. As a result there were 2 overflow tubes which ran from the battery out the bottom of the box. These rubber lines had ribbing down them and fit tight into the 2 holes at the bottom of the battery box. On my '70 the location where they stick out the bottom is on the outer edge, close to the wheel, about centered. ~Juliet
