It does'nt appear that a hood for a 72 had any insulation. Am I correct? I don't see it in any catalogs. I also do not see any holes for fastners in the underside of my hood. Just wondering as I restore this thing I run into things like this.
Thanks
Lonnie

No insulation until '74 or '75 I believe.  Any NCRS guys on this?

My 73 had one. Not sure if any earlier cars had it but it is a good thing to have. Keeps the hood cooler and deadens some of the underhood noise. Not that it's a bad thing.

Actually, they started the insulation in '69, albeit a much smaller one than the later cars have, and not all '69s had it. It only covered the front part of the hood, up to the radiator area.
Then...they just quit installing it, until '73. These were full hood blankets, front to rear. They are held on with pins glued onto the bottom side of the hood. The blanket has holes in it for the pins, and then the retainers snap-fit over the pins to hold the blanket on. They(the blankets) were not glued to the hood from the factory, but some people do glue them.
The '73-'75 blankets have a large hole in the centers of them for the cowl induction air cleaner assy.
You might be able to cut one to work on your '72, but it would have the big hole, which would pretty much defeat the purpose!
I'm not sure if the later, '76> cars had then, but I don't think they did...

My 2 owner 77 came to me with a blanket of insulation held on with about 6-8 pins and large plastic washers.

Thanks for that info, Mike! So, Lonnie could possibly get one for a '77(without the hole), and cut it down to fit the '72! The pins and retainers are available from most of the vendors. All you would need to do is glue the pins to the hood, and install the blanket!

To give you an idea of what it looks like.  This one seems almost too cheap.  Someone purchase one of these and tell me what the quality is like....

This is what my 74 Hood insulation looks like.  Has plastic pins glued to the hood and metal retaining "washers" that snap on to hold the insulation in place.

The NCRS Judging Guide for 70-72 will tell you.  Ditto for Dr. Dobbins' book Vette Vues 1968-72 Corvette Guide Book.

If you cannot find evidence that one was originally installed on your car, it probably didn't have a blanket.

I can tell you without buying one...it is cheap. The factory blankets are molded to fit the contours of the hood. These cheap aftermarket ones are just flat...basically air duct insulation cut to fit.
The one I got for the '74 was around $60...several years ago, but it is a correct repro, as far as material, shape, fit, etc. They do keep a lot of engine heat off of the hood, as well as the oil spray from the A/C compressor, which can soak thru the 'glass, and damage the paint.
