Vette(s): Second-month production Shark, this 1968E was built up by original owner into 1969 ZR1 (L88 body with LT1 engine) for Club Racing. Body styling is from Maglioli's 1968 L88 "Le Mans" racer
As my car's a 69 Duntov ZL1 replica body-wise, I replaced the oem hood locking mechanism with hood pins.

I was pleased to find a set that screwed into the existing hood lock brackets and kept the oem compression spring with base and retainer to maintain the "sprung" closure effect. Existing hood stoppers are in place, too.

The result is the staggered hood pins seen on Duntov's white "mule" road racer. Likely it was done the same way on subsequent IMSA and SCCA racers.

A few pics. Screws for plates not shown because they'll go into the outer plates when the hood positioning is finalised.
1968E (2nd month production) convertible first registered California 1967 and a retired SCCA race car. It is still race prepped and built up as a '69 ZR1 (announced '69 but not built until '70); i.e., the L88 car with LT1 motor.

I bought mine from a local seller (Australia) who delivered them out of the package, so I don't know the maker's name. I've looked at the Mr. Gasket set on their website and it is NOT the set I have.

Based on the details of the lanyards that came in the set, and the rest of the bits in the pic, I think this Scott Drake set (http://www.drakeautomotivegroup.com/Store/Product/S1MS-16892-DLX.aspx?wid=141) is correct.

Experience told me to use an oversize hole in the hood, as aligning a half-inch hole with the pins is unrewarding. Likely I'll use fine bolts and nuts to hold the plate, rather than the screws provided.

Say Red,
Would you mind checking the diameter of the pins.
Also, could you please measure the length of them ? approx dim is ok
Did they screw right in to the threads in the stock brackets or did you use nuts on both sides to hold them?
If you did screw them directly in I believe the the thread is 1/2-20.
Thanks again,
Joe

I certainly meant for my original post to communicate that the pins are the same diameter and thread as the stock pins, and that's why they threaded directly into the factory brackets. The factory base nut is utilised ABOVE the bracket and keeps the pin in the selected vertical position, as it did with the factory pins.

Red,
Thanks for that clarification.
I'll look into Drakes.
Do you have any more pics of your vette? Or a web site were you have pics on it?
Reading your description it looks like we have the same taste in styling.

Research indicates that the father/son team that owned this car since 1967, modified it to emulate Maglioli's own 1968 racer and other Le Mans cars of the period.
When I discovered the car didn't have rear bumpers, I originally thought it was as a result of crash damage. But the body man said there was no evidence of a crash, and when I stumbled across pics of Duntov's famous white 1969 ZL1 "mule" I began to get a clue. But the street versions of the ZL1 and even the ZR1 just confused the issue.
Then more accidental discoveries led to the L88 Corvettes at Le Mans and Le Tour de France and the mystery was solved, at least for me. These FIA Group 4 cars consistently featured the same bodywork: front bumperettes delete, rear bumpers delete, ZL1 fender flares, wide American wheels, L88 hood, large chin spoiler, side exhaust, removable hardtop.
Here's a link that has many pics of Maglioli and his L88 car: http://www.c3registry.org/index.php?job=ShowCorvette&car_id=6074&uid=6616

And a few pics of my own car, as it looked when it landed in Melbourne, Australia (it's now in Sydney).

My current guess is that it was campaigned in SCCA Club Racing in B Production category, a class that no longer exists. That would perhaps explain why it was turned into a road car again, with the removal of the side exhaust, still with a lot missing (non-original seats, no headliner, homemade carpeting, no radio) but still with all its race parts (steel safety bellhousing, F41 suspension, ignition disconnect switch, Hurst). Even the front lower valance had been modified to accept an unusual chin spoiler of the era, which I was lucky enough to find again and install.
