Vette(s): 1978 Corvette Light Blue Pulled from the swamps of Miami! Its a driver and back on the road!

ok this is getting old. the shop that I stopped to get a quote for car painted in December is still stalling weather hail rain ...no room for your car????? does anyone want to pain a Corvette.  So I stop on the way home and this auto shop which someone recommended but was $$$$ wants $8500 to paint my cAR. there IS NO REAL BODY WORK just minor cracks and the scuff mark where the right rear tire let loose.  So I am asking what is a fair price for a driver to be repainteds with no major body work.  Strip and Paint??????? and no one seems to want to do it or they stick you high so you go away.  I could buy another fix r upper from the alligator salesman in Florida for $8500....

Could someone chime in and let me know what is a realistic price range for just a strip and paint driver paint job not a show paint job.  And serious just miner body work????

Maybe Im expecting too much.

Vette(s): 1972 mille miglia red corvette convertible. This is a car currently under restoration. The pic above is of me and my Ph.D. candidate daughter. She, not my Vette, is my pride and joy. Smile...
I got mine done for $4,800 with a little more body work than you need. But I'm in Boise, Idaho. So it's a long drive for you. Some here will shoot me for saying this. But our local Maaco guy is a vette freak. I actually should gave used him. Body work, paint, cut and buff for $6,400. If you find the right chain owner you will get a good result. If not...

I've had quotes all over the board.  Your best bet would to see what cars he's painted.  Go to a couple car shows and ask the guys/ladies there who painted their cars.  You know how much we love to talk about cars.  They'll also be able to steer you away from the great "deals" on a paint job.

$8500 sounds more like a really NICE paint job...not driver quality....that's show quality, imo. Some shops may not want to do a Earl Shiebe job....
I was quoted $6000 top do my '74 back in '97 by a friend of mine who does nothing but high end cars. I know for a fact it would have been absolutely perfect when finished, but he also needed the car for at least 6 months.....I couldn't do it. Should have, tho....the job I got for $3000 is a major source of anger for me.....

A decent, driver quality paint should be anywhere from $1500-$2500, imo. Gotta remember, this is a fiberglass surface....the prep work and paint are different from painting a metal car.

Vette(s): 1974 L-48 Auto. Just your basic Vette. GM crate motor w/vortec heads and intake. Crane cam. Scorpion rockers, Edelbrock carb. Lots of parts still in boxes... :(
I am sorta shopping now, and hope to have mind done in the fall. Can't find anyone here that wants to do anything but quick insurance jobs... No one wants to do an entire car.

That's what I'm finding out they want insurance money seems like there should be a place that wants to strip patch prime and paint mine are just little dings and scratches so no major work. Waiting on two places for quotes. It's not that I'm not willing to pay but I can buy a 93 car for 14000 why does it cost $8000 to paint my 78. Still searching in PA. Thanks for everyone's input. Plus I basically got all stuff removed ready to go. And that I shouldn't have to do either Thanks,BB78

Paint is lots of labor and now...highly priced paints!

The cost of painting is why many sell and buy another car.....that does not need painting.  You've heard the saying...it's cheaper in the long run the buy the best car you can afford now.  A car given to you for free can cost you a bundle!

Yes material is high like John said and cost to remove waste is high also. Still up my way you can get it done for $1500.00 plus material by the small home garage guys. Still a pretty decent job, but it will take time as most have a different full time job.
I've done some pretty good outdoor jobs quite a few times myself.
Do you have any thoughts of doing it yourself? Or are there any schools that offer paint jobs?

Vette(s): 1982 C3 Collectors Edition 44000 miles, sat in the sun most of its life, My wife purchased it for me for Father's Day in 2007 from her girlfriend that had it for 19 years. It is on the road again. I'm retired but it is now my daily driver.
I'm getting my 82 Collector painted with the fader painted also at a shop $2800 good driver quality.  But I'm getting it done through a Corvette shop that get 8 or more painted by this guy each year. So I'm getting a better deal in quality and price than is normally available.

At least this is what I'm hoping for.  I have thought about painting it outside and then color sanding it but the faders would have to be decal then and they cost $1300 for a set.

Thanks for all the replies I appreciate it.

I am waiting for a new estimate from someone recommended to me but still have not gotten a quote? He mentioned about can I remove the mirrors and the key lock and the stainless door handles?????Well yes I probably can never tried but if I'm prepping the car and taking everything off then why is the paint job so expensive?????

We show see what the price comes in?

But I do have a question on the door opener. Yes its easy to get the first screw off from inside the door but the second nut towards the rear of the door yo can't get a wrench in there or socket. I'm assumoing you have to take the 3 screws off the rear of the door panel where the doo opens and drop the hingles which work all door components to allow a wrench to fit onto the nut and be able to remove it???If someone can chime in before I try this to make sure there is not an easier way. The mirror I figured out and the key slot, well I think I figured out the mirror. I am leaving the control for driver mirror connected no way Im trying to snake that rubber thing through the slot in the door hinge?  so it will have to dangle until then.

So if anyone can enlighten me on the rear door opener  nut inside underneath and back agaist the rear of the door I would realyy appreciate it.

I'm getting really frustrated and might just see if Vo-tech will do it?????

Thanks again in advance!  BB78
