Is there supposed to be a separate key to activate the factory alarm option key switch at the rear of my '71 or should it be the same as the key for the door locks? |headscratch|

Nope. Ignition and doors are keyed alike - the square key. Oval-head key is for the alarm switch, glove box, battery compartment and jack stowage.

Hope that helps.

My square key only works the ignition, a round key for the doors, glove box, alarm, and spare tire lock. My door locks and alarm had been changed before so I don't know if they were the same. Any key shop can make them the same if thats what you want.

And if you do have them re-keyed (which I am in the process of doing with mine now) don't forget your spare tire carrier. Originally, the oval-head key was for that lock also. |thumb|

Like Brian said, a locksmith can handle it all for you.

Affirmative, Scot. The lock covers the hex head of the tire carrier rear bolt - to keep just anybody with a pair of pliers from toting your spare to the pawn shop.

Let me take a wild guess here: you've been fortunate enough to never need your spare. Am I close on this one? |laugh|

Yeah, completely correct there...which is probably a good thing...considering....I don't have the steel for it...just rubber! |headscratch| |headscratch| It wasn't there when I bought the car.

When I fixed the diff in March I pulled the whole housing down and left it off(well I put the upper part back so a rock wouldn't hit the gas tank..?)

However...no keys or nothin, just a nut.
