My luggage rack (6 hole) is in need of some freshening up.

Was thinking of replacing - though not sure if one will fit the current holes, have heard may not be simple bolt on.

Was also thinking of rechroming, but a bit on the expensive side. When I checked it was at least twice the cost of replacement.

And finally, was considering powder coating it black.

What have you done or would you do?

Thanks -

I have heard there are some differences between the repops and the original equipment.  Not sure what.  Personally I would rechrome.  I think Black would look out of place.

I will tell you there is a new powdercoat and process out that almost looks like chrome.  Its so close its pretty scary.

If you look to have it rechromed i would look at sending it to advance plating in Nashville.  Their awesome.

The catalog companies list a six- and an eight-hole luggage rack as replacements. They have them in chrome as well as stainless steel. It does have a note that they don't fit all factory racks and to call them for measurements (that's from Mid-America Motorworks).

You might give them a call before spending the big bucks on re-chroming. Maybe what they have will work out. The stainless steel would look nice.

There are several different types of repop racks. You have to check your measurements against what they offer. There is some leeway as far as the holes go, but not much. Chrome is the best looking, as some of the stainless ones I've seen don't look all that good. You could spent a lot of time polishing one, but what a PITA I got an 'installation kit' from a supplier, and the washers were stainless, but looked more like tin. I did'nt use them, just used the rubber nuts, and the screws. If you have a rack that fits your car now, I'd rechrome it. If you're doing some paint/bodywork, then a new rack would be OK, 'cause then you could fit it while the bodywork was done. My 2c.
