Is there a way to safely close the headlights manually?

I have done it before by reaching up and pulling down on the arm where the vacuum can attaches to the housing.

I did check my '71 owner's manual. It says not to close them manually. Not sure why...

when they say dont close manually the mean not to push down directly on the headlight assembly. i have an 82 and i had problems with my light not poping up. while fixing the problem i manually closed the headlights a million times. there is a hindge where the headlight rides on. by reaching up from under the headlights themselves you will see/feel a screw that is used for adjustments up/down. lightly lift (to releave stress) the top of the headlight cover and then pull down on the adj screw, the headlights will drift down. watch your fingers. this i believe only works with the car OFF.

is it only the 78's that have a pull down switch under the dash just to right of steering wheel. I had to manually open Ian's to change the lightbulb in one headlight. The car has to be off, pull the switch down, pushing it back up makes them close again. I got a good scare when I first did it, the screws holding the switch had come out and it wouldn't push back up. After about ten minutes of sweating and searching I discovered the switch was loose.

I think all the sharks have that switch. My '71 has it...
