Vette(s): 1971 T-top. I just had car shipped from my parents house in florida where it has sat for over 12 years..It is going to be a long project!
Well the saga continues. I knew I probably had some rust around the windshield frame or somewhere up there as I found rust chunks on the floor. Well I took off wiper door and found how water was getting into car the..

Well I thought that looked hard to fix and then I found this behind kick panels

The rest of the windshield frame wasnt to bad. So the question is, can this be fixed by a novice like myself? I do have a certified welder in family, but how do I get to these areas? Do I have to take off the front fenders?

It was a very depressing Sunday, Im starting to doubt this entire project..

Well thanks to everybody for all your help so far, I couldnt of got as far as I have without this site!!

Is the rust through, or just surface and flakey?

If it went through you need to cut and weld in some new pieces. You can treat the rust and plate over the existing surface, or cut the old away completely and weld new pieces in place. This is a judgement call. The total replacement is best, but the plating can be a good repair.

If the metal has no holes, you could just clean up the rust and treat the metal to prevent further damage. Clean away the rust as best as possible, then use an acid etch to get rid of all of the remaining rust. Then use a zinc rich primer, regular primer, then paint.

The acid should only be used where you can rinse the parts after etching. If you can't rinse the area with lots of water, use a self etching primer, then follow up as above.

I did a lot of the same with mine. The windshield frame was good but the bottom rocker channels were shot. http://hometown.aol.com/bmclau5079/page5.html

In looking at the pics you might need a pro to look at the wiper area.

Behind the kick panels I think you can take care of following Ken's advise.

That is, unless you plan to take the body off to do the repairs. If you were planning on taking the body off anyway then the repairs will be relatively easy.

Good luck... |cheers|

The wiper door assembly is not as hard to remove as it looks, Take that out and thoroughly clean the bay.
Ken is absolutely right about the process, as an alternative to welding a patch in, POR makes a kit for patching smaller holes in floor and trunk pans, it may work in the tray if the holes are not too big.
The body mount section you showed us looks to me like it should clean up. Getting that rusty bolt out may give some trouble, but very doable.

Thanks to all for quick reply..The rust does go through at the corners below the windshield:

The driver side is a little worse. I cant imagine that all the rust I scooped out came from here. The question still is how do I get to these areas? I saw the body off pics from redwing but that was more rocker channel, this seems to be bird cage or pillars or whatever that piece is that the doors bolt on to. I still dont know what that piece is by the wiper door or how to get to any of this stuff.

Thanks again guys!!!

Well I deceided to call a professional after taking door off this weekend and seeing the rust in the door pillar. I called a place in Tempe az called corvette resotoration. The guy I spoke to gave me his email and told me to send him pics and her would try to tell me what the damage is going to be. If anyone here is from arizona, have they heard of this place??

Thanks, Ron
