Hi Irlene. First of all welcome to the site. Here's a couple of links that might help. One is instructions on how to open it. http://www.c3vr.com/member_pages/4201_4300/4221/Pop-Your-Hood.JPG
The other is a thread where someone had the same problem
Hope this helps, "T"

Here is what I did
The latch lever sits above the brake master cylinder. I think if you remove the splash guard which is a horizontal piece that fills between the frame, left front inner fender well and body you can get your hand up to the latch. I had to first remove my carbon canister on my 76. I think if you shine a light up there you may be able to see the tap that everyone is talking about. It can be done, I did it on mine and I have short arms. Also there is a hole in the wiper well on the left side. If you pop out the plastic plug and then with a screw drive push around until you hit the tab which releases the latch. Good luck

The Mid america that brother T posted will work.... been there done that!
I tried several times to get my hood open. For one thing I could not get my hand between the hood and the windshield. I was able to get a screwdriver in a hole but it was not a hole with a plastic/rubber plug. There is no rubber plug. But there a round hold that seem to go under the hood but I could not get my screwdriver into anything and I was not able to shine a light underneath to see anything. It is a tight fit. Anybody else have any suggestions

Irlene,
I can assure you the plug is there on your 76 although it may be hard to recognize. It sits down in the cowl well where your wiper mechinism is. (it ain't gonna be fun).
Here is a LINK to several conversations and solutions in regards to getting the hood open.
Be patient, try not to swear, and don't throw things. Your gonna get it.
