It is the factory color, "Medium Red Metallic", code 74L.
This was a new color for '74, and the only year for this particular color.
That's all I know, as far as that. It is purdy, tho!

Any decent body shop will be able to mix the color to match, as the formulas are still available. Somewhere, I have info on all of the old paint codes, and the modern formulas. It is a web-site that will give this info. Now...I'll have to look that up!

I'll try to get ahold of the man that gave us the info, and see if I can get the correct poop.

I haven't been able to get any other info...will keep trying.
When I had the car painted in '97, the paint shop was able to get the correct color formula, but all the info I have come up with so far only supports later model cars.
I'll keep looking...

I was just reading this thread and thought I would throw in my 2 cents. If you go to autocolorlibrary.com,there are pictures of paint chip charts along with paint code numbers for all factory cars.Don't know if this helps at all,but the charts are fun to look at

That's kewl you found it. The colors are not all easy to see, but, it is a good representation. These are the pages from the paint books we used to use. Someone photo-copied them, and put them up on a web-page, so they don't really come out all that great!

Check out the PAINT CHIP BOOKS here! Just click on the manufacturer, and then the year, then, "View Chips"!! Kewl!

I think what Joanne is wanting is how to find the actual paint formula, that tells what colors to mix, in what ratios, to get a specific color. The search continues...

THE DYNAMIC DUO

As far as the "L" in your paint code, it is like that because GM went to two-toned colors in '74, and sometime during the year, they changed the paint codes to reflect that. The "L" is meant to mean "Lower color" on two-tones("U" would be for upper), but on the solid color cars, the code had an "L" at the end, instead of the "9" at the beginning.
