Help need:

My precious 71 caught fire in December 2003. It has been painted three times, by the looks of it. I want to restore it to its original colour, which was "Steel Cities Gray Firemist"

The following information was found of the web:
R.P.O.: 988
COLOR NAME: Steel Cities Gray Firemist
LUCITE NO.: 5294-L
DITZLER NO.: 2358

This is unfortunately not enough information for the body shop to work from. I also asked (many a time) the Chev dealer to help with the formula(s) - but no reply (3 weeks!) They just returned to SA and the service sucks already.....

I haven't seen any Vette in that colour in my country, and doubt that there is one here - It is not the most stunning colour, but rather unique.

Is there anyone who has more information on this?

I would really appreciate!!!!

THANX,

I just bought paint for my 68. All I needed was the paint code from the trim tag, or build sheet. I'll assume that is 988 in your case. Since you are doing an " all over" a dead match to your existing paint shouldn't be an issue. Your body shop should know this!
GM used different names for the same paint colors, but the paint codes stayed the same. Are you going back with laquer? I went with a base clear urethane.
Hope I helped, if not let me know, I'll call my supplier Monday and get more info. I'll need to know what system you want to use.

Vette(s): ......
In my younger years I worked for a local parts store that sold DuPont paint, and I used to mix the colors for all the body shops around here.I think what your body man wants is the original dupont formula ,right?so he can mix it himself, you should be able to get it from any DuPont dealer if they have the old files,or you may have to call there head quarters to get it,it shouldn,t be a big problem |thumb|

Hi guys,

There is only one small problem... I am not as lucky as you to be in the States. I am in AFRICA... Exiting, but not very useful when it get to Vettes.

Therefore I need some more info. The paint shops, body shops, part shops, mechanic shop, "you-name-it" shops just goes "huh?" when you ask them any questions wrt to the paint finishing.

I cannot trust the guys to match the original colour, since it has been covered by two other coats of paint and I would like it to be spot on, not a near match. (Perfection! nothing less for my precious)

Please help.....

Thanx!
