I went out today to buy paint for my frame..
since im not going for a factory look..
I bought a qt of Dupont gloss black with reducer and catalyst.. I nearly filled my shorts at the register.. ouch..
if I remember daves (and others) recommendations right .. then i got pricing on body paint too..
I priced a urethane primer, basecoat, and clear coat..
I had thought i wanted cadillac metallic black cherry..but it looked a little to black to me..
im looking for a dark red.. one that will look black at night but still look a little red during the day.. anyone have a recommendation ?
and what is the consensus on using a chemical stripper.. good, bad, ugly???

A couple of years ago saw a C4 at a show that had a REALLY deep, deep, dark magenta/purple on it. From a distance it looked black and at first I wasn't going to go over and look at it (it was a C4 afterall!
). But then the sun caught it just right and that color reached out and latched onto my eyeballs so I had to go over and get a closer look. Up close the color looked to be about a foot thick and absolutely brilliant...!!!
If memory serves correctly it was listed simply as 'Black Cherry' on the placard. Not much help I'm afraid but it was an AWESOME color!

First, on the paint materials, are you painting it your self? The reason I'm asking is all painters have a preference, yes I recommend the urethane base/clear. Primers are as varied as we are. As long as you use a catalyzed primer, your fine. I did a series of primers on mine. First a good heavy coat of polyester so I had something to block with and also to adequately cover the bodywork (this was all hand blocked with 180 followed by a 320 grit dry sand. Next primer was a color build urethane that was wet sanded with 600 then 1000, it almost shined when we got it all rubbed out. Base and clear followed that.
As far as chem strippers, I use them all the time. They are messy, but work well for me. It can weaken bare glass, but with care, it really never has been an issue. I'd recommend stripping down to the primer, then block sand from there. It's not necessary to get all the old primer off either.

no i wont be doing that.. ill paint the frame and interior... but not the body..
i do plan on doing the stripping my self and possibly the primer..
I have a dupont shop here locally thats about 3 blocks from my office.. do they make the polyester primer ?
i guess ill do what you did with the polyester high fill and then urethane primer..
how much paint is required per coat for the body..
how many primer coats will I need..
and then is it triple paint and triple clear or just one or the other?

I like the Impala from what I can see, but I also like the G.T.O.---but it might be a little on the dark side for you
Yea I like the impy the best! But your eyes are different from mine. I like that dark red. Its dark but, you can still tell its a red car. The c-4 vette is not in the sunlight so its a tough call for me. It looks purple in the flash reflection.
