I have a 1972 numbers matching frame off restoration in progress.  Trying to keep it as original as possible.  With that in mind, what color should the engine compartment be painted?  Should the area where the wiper blades are stored while not in use be the same color of the car or color of engine compartment?  Thanks, David

The engine compartment was a semi-flat/satin black.
The wiper compartment would have mostly body color, but it wouldn't be painted completely, since it's not really seen...it was more overspray than actual paint. Then the compartment would have been "mopped" with an asphalt-based undercoating around the holes, and seams, as a sealer.

I assume they are painting it with guns.  I would find out from them in the event you scrath something during a needed repair down the road, what products work best to match up if a scrath occurs.

You might think I am crazy, but THE BEST body shop down here for custom shoots often uses Krylon semi flat out of the can.  For whatever reason, Krylon matches down the road in a needed touch up.  It has go to be a QC process they use.

I had them shoot my Ford.  They shot the engine compartment with Kryon semi flat in a can.  Sho enuf, I scratched the inner fender well.  I taped everything off, sanded the area, re shot the Krylon can and you cannot tell I ever nicked her up.

This car does very well in shows, so she is a keeper.  I also won the Ford Fun Weekend Best of Show with her first time out and Best Paint the following year , as they won't give out Best of Show years in a row.  That is a serious show, if you have never been to it.  Ford employees from around the country actually judge the weekend event.  So Krylon works well - trust me on this one.  I have a ton of money in this car and I sure am glad he told me that cause I am always doing something to the car.  It's a Fird - remember!

They might think you are crazy asking them that, but it works for me.  The owner of the shop consistently gets top 5 PPG awards years running, so they know what they are doing.

Good luck with that!

Joel is right about the wiper compartment.  They didn't actually paint in there, but a lot of overspray found it's way in.  And the tar was literaly "mopped" into place.

I agree that the Krylon semi-flat is very close, as is the Eastwood semi-gloss.  Either would be found acceptable by a judge.

Dave,

This process was not a precision painting procedure, it was more of a one pass spray of paint.

Here's a pic of my '68 compartment.  Only the top of the engine bay recieved the "black-out."  The chalk marks on bare fiberglass are still there and I made sure not top spray over them when I painted mine.

Be sure to install the A-Arm covers & engine compartment seals prior to painting, and hit the edges with a little overspray for authenticity.

I used Eastwood's Under Hood Black.  The picture makes it look shinier than the actual finish.

When it's all together, not much is visible.

Good luck,
Anthony

Joel,

That picture was taken in May of 2006, just before I said "while I'm here" & I pulled the front suspension.

She's been back together since August of 2007 except for the wiper door, but I'll figure it out eventually.
