I have a '69 convertible. I have been led to understand that back in the day,
passenger side mirrors were a dealer installed option. Part of that install
was a mounting bracket that went inside the door skin. Does anyone know where
I can get one of those mounting brackets. Just looking at the door skin, I
have to guess that they need to be fashioned to fit a curve and I just know I
can not do that.

I looked in several parts catalogs I have from last year and none of them had an inside bracket for the right side mirror. A couple though (Paragon and Rik's) had listed an installation kit that had 2 screws and 2 well nuts that could be used on the left side if the re-enforcement bracket was missing. None of them listed just the re-enforcement bracket, even as part of a installation kit.
I haven't figured out how to tighten up the right side bracket on mine yet. There's some play between the mounting plate and the mirror stalk that I can't seem to get rid of. The darn thing flops around a bit so can't ever get it adjusted just right to be useful. So have to throw a quick glance over the right shoulder to check the blind spot (easy to do when the top is dropped, not as easy though with the top up).

Hi Jim,
You mention some play between the stalk and the body. There is an allen
screw that holds the stalk to the mounting plate. If that gets loose, the mirror
will flop all over the place. Did you check the allen screw?
I have looked all through a whole bunch of catalogs for the inside door mount
brack and just can not locate one. The local resto shop swears they exist and he
won't mount the mirror without it.
Thanks for the come back.

Glenns -- the tapping plate you seek was part of the door assembly. If it's there, it should be in the same position as the mirror on the driver's side. You cannot see the tapping plate with the door panel on and it isn't all that easy to see with the panel off. It's a metal plate about 1/8" thick and about 1x4. It provides reinforcement on the underside of the fiberglass door skin when the holes for the mirror mount are drilled and the barrel nuts inserted.

The thing that bugs me is that all the screws are tight, yet I still have the play between the outside bracket and the mirror stalk. I took everything apart and discovered that previously someone had tried to use a dose of gasket type goop to fillup the inside of the stalk to limit its movement, but that wasn't doing the job either. Something to play with when I get the beast home from storage in a couple of weeks.

This reply is for both Easy Mike and Norsky.
Easy Mike....thanks! Is the plate there from the factory ( your reply kinda
indicates that it is )?
Norsky......I had to think about my reply to you...I don't think often and it shows
all too often. I put large head mirror on my driver side and it would not tighten.
I was installing it on the mount for the small head mirror. When I replaced the
mount with the one for the large head, it tightened up. I am not saying that
this is your trouble, but if it can be that finicky, that allen might be worth
a closer look on your mirror.
Before anyone jumps on me...I have no clue as to why the large head mirror would
not tighten up on the small head mount....they sure look the same to me.
Thanks for the come-backs guys :-)

e - thanks for the links. The link about the loose mirror talks about the sport mirrors, which I think are the more areo looking ones, not the chrome ones like is being installed in the other link.
Glenn - the Zip catalog was one that I looked in for the re-enforcement plate and couldn't find, but did see where it mentioned "all hardware included in mounting kits" so assume the well nuts as seen in the pics of the second link from e.
Anyone know what the measurements of the small and large mirror heads are? To be honest I'm not sure which ones I've got. It certainly is possible that there is a difference in size between the base mounting plates of the two mirrors and that is why I can't seem to get the darn thing tighened up.
Thanks Gang!

Yes, the right side mirror was not a factory installed option in 1969, or 1970 for that matter. I forget which year it became standard & I don't have my book here to look it up. FWIW in NCRS judging you will receive a deduction for a passenger side mirror, but they get you for condition on the door panel - because the factory one didn't have holes drilled in it. Generally it's only a point or two out of the 4500 points you start with - ie, well worth the deduct for the safety it brings. ~Juliet
