I've had many ask me if it fell off!! I like not having one on there because its different. I don't think vision is a problem either especially since the back window is right at the back of my head. I'll be sticking with my original look.

My 73 didn't come with a pass mirror. I drilled the holes for the welnuts and there was no metal under there, just fiberglass. The instructions for the aftermarket drivers side mirror said it would flop around on a stock mounting plate. I had to fiddle around with both to get them to tighten - actually reefed on that allen screw quite hard before the mirror stopped moving around. Joe

I think I remember reading somewhere that a passenger side mirror was a dealer installed option starting in '74 or '75. I don't see any factory mirror options listed in the "Black Book" until the sport mirror (D35) option in '77. Not that it's absolute, but none of the cars pictured in the "Black Book" are shown with a passenger side mirror until the '77, although it's a little hard to tell in their '76 picture.

68-74 had the small head mirror 5.5 x 3.75
75-79 had the large head mirror 6.25 x 3.5

Some people prefer the large head for better visibility, but I have no problem with the small head, and I think it looks better. Joe

Thanks for the measurements. Will have tape measure in hand to check out what is on "The Toy" this weekend. My bride about had a fit when I put on those little rectangular "blind spot" add-on mirrors, but when the top is up (which is seldom) I'd much rather be able to see better around me than "crack some 'glass" on something that is hiding in a blind spot.

What size rear window is in your top? Mine has an old replacement top with a window that was only about 2/3 the width of the window in the new Al Knoch top I just had put on. I got rid of most of my blind spot with the new top. The new window goes almost all the way to the pins that hold the top to the deck. Joe

Ok, I'm confused. |headscratch| Measured the outside mirrors on "The Toy" and here's what I've got (outside edge dimensions in inches): Driver side - 3 3/4" tall X 6 1/4" wide; Passenger side - 3 3/4" tall X 5 3/8" wide

Guess I must have a non-original large head on the driver side and the original small head on the passenger side.

Joe, I must also have an older style top as there is quite a broad band of fabric under the rear window. The window also doesn't extend very far from left to right so that is why I have extra mirrors on to eliminate the blind spots (when the top is up that is!).

Thanks!

When you are talking about tightening the mirror, are you talking about the mirror head? I have the large chrome sport mirrors on my 74 and they will not stay tightened for more than 2 minutes. Any help?

1970 came from the factory with one small mirror on the driver's side. I have a fix (works for 6 months at a time) for the floppy heads on the mirrors. Mark where the outside flange lines up on the center ball with a sharpie or something permanent so that you know the driving position. Take the mirror off the car (the set screw at the end of the stalk). Set it down on a very well padded foam / towel / whatever. Then turn it so that you can see the ball part as far behind the mirror head as possible. The metal is soft pot metal. Take a center punch and make some ping pock marks in the hidden part of the ball, in where it needs to grab. You need a very soft setting since it's pretty soft metal. This will make some extra friction due to the dimple craters and help hold it in place better. I did that with my original one several times until I got a replacement one. It would hold for about 6 months at a time. At about 90 mph or so it would start to droop again, but regular hwy driving & cruising it held OK. The other thing I've read is where folks got it all lined up & used super glue to hold it in place. ;) To remove the dated original glass you need to soak the whole glass head part in lacqeur thinner or equivalent to soften the glue on the back - or so I've read. I haven't had a chance to do that to mine to transfer my original mirror glass to my new chrome part. ~Juliet

If you are talking about the bullet type, If you take them off the car, look up in the "stalk". there should be a torx screw in there. Tighten it and that keeps the head tight.
