I didn't want to step on jbox1's thread. Are there any good books on how to do your own prep and paint? I'm fairly clueless about painting, thow in fiberglass and I'm really confused. I think I could sand and spray primer fairly good, if I had a little direction. Mine actually has a fairly decent paint job from what I can tell, no fish eyes or orange peel overspray etc.. but there are the usuall trouble spots bumpers and some dings and scrathches. Does the whole thing need to be redone or could some of the trouble spots be fixed up untill it can be done right?

There are a lot of good books on prep and paint.. Either Hot Rod or Car
Craft magazine had a series that might be all you need. Don't try
to find one book that covers fiberglass repair and general paint all in
one book. If you just hav ethe usual few cracks, just grind most
of the way through the glass, then fill with mat soaked in resin.
Do this before you strip paint, so you have something to sand down to
without making the surrounding glass too thin. Mat and resin are
avilable at any auto parts store.
You can usually do a good job of spot repairs. They will probably show a little, but might be fine until you want to do the whole project.
Have fun!

If it is just chips and scratches, you won't need any mat and resin. That is only needed for major cracks.
Small chips can be touched up with paint if you can match the color.
The important thing is proper preperation. There are several good books on procedure and tips. Check the C3VR sponsors.

Yeah that one does look good. I couldn't find a book on fiberglass that had any good reviews on amazon so that's why I was asking. I wish it was small chips and cracks, the bumpers are really bad, I think they might have too much paint?? and that's making the paint crack and chip so much. Even if I do get it all done at a shop I would like to know as much as possible about the process. The 8k price range talked about on the other thread was a real jaw dropper for me. 79rebuild 2007-12-14 18:32:05

Vette(s): 1978 L48, p/s, p/w/ factory ac car factory manual trans has a 350 crate engine w/260hp, but also have original which may be rebuilt- we also have a 76 w/ a 454, and 74 350 in various stages of being rebuilt, plus an 86 and an 02....
When it comes to glass- my experience was that getting someone to show you is usually more benificial than a book. There was some that the books didn't explain clearly. Also, I know some disagree- but if there is much damage it seems to hold up longer if you completely strip, sand, etc. Its definatley a pain, but matching is hard if there are many areas bigger than a small rock chip, and the paint ages differently..... just my 2 cents.... I have both C3 volumes from the Glas-Ra folks. I like them.
Eckler's fiberglass book is also pretty fair although I caught a blurb somewhere about it possibly being out of print.
