my car is mostly stripped done to bare fiberglass with a combination of various fillers that have been used over the years. Is there anything that someone could recomend to seal the surface to startdoing some finishing body work?

Matt,
I don't have a specific answer for you. However, Kyster posted a lot of pictures and info on the body work and repaint of his 'Vette.
Take a look at C3 Body posts back around July of '08 and follow those posts up until the recent weeks.
As I remeber there was a ton of info & input on those threads.
Best of luck to you.
Kevin

Take a look at "WHOO-HOO" for starters.

Most experts recommend sticking with a product line through the whole process.  I prefer PPG, so I start with OMNI black epoxy primer for one wet coat, followed by PPG K36 high build primer for blocking.  Then I follow with the appropriate sealer - base coat - clear coat, or single stage paint.

Matt, not to take anything away from our in house experts, but I did find some start to finish articles at Corvette Forum  that were very interesting with lots of photos also.

Hi Matt, primer and paint is a loaded question for sure.Ask 10 people you WILL get 10 answers. I just painted my eighth or so car.The Corvette was my first glass car,so rather then screw something up I spoke to the Central Florida PPG rep, face to face. What he told me is what I did.First off, Use no polyester primers, only epoxy.
He told me to put on three heavy, wet coats and put the car in the sun if possible...I did. No other primers needed for blocking because the three coats of epoxy is what I blocked. The primer he suggested was 235 (I think) Not home at the moment. Blocking was done dry and went very easy,so easy I went down to glass in many spots,.but thats OK,because I blocked the car five times and used 1 1/2 gallons.Sticker shock at $155.00/gallon,and it doesn't come in qts! I painted the car 2-3 weeks ago and I can say it is straight. The epoxy primer can also be tinted for your finished color. Do not be afraid to use any type guide coat for blocking,it is all going away. Some will tell you to use only high dollar guide coat, not true. The PPG 235 is also a sealer,so no other primers are needed. When blocking move your blocking pad verticaly and horizontaly,no circular motions and as soon as that guide coat goes away get off that area and move on to another spot. One little tip if you'll permit me,Within just a few days after appling three coats of clear, block the the clear. If you wait a month or more you will think you are sanding a concrete driveway.Remember, bodyshops do a paint job and get it back to you in 3 days, they look good and bodyshop makes money. Clear sands out easier when still soft keeping labor costs down to the shop owner. I spent around $700.00 for all materials start to finish.

thanks for all of the info. I have worked with basf paints before so that's probably the brand I'll end up with. From what I have read here and elsewhere, it sounds like a epoxy primer to the first coat.
