Some of you may recall that I took my 72 454 Coupe off the road to refresh "a few" things, that was 5 years ago! Anyway just dropped the gas tank and bought a new replacement. While under there I coated all the exposed frame I could reach with rust encapsulator and noticed that the rear body mounts are pretty rusted (car is from Canada...thats another story!). I think the #4 body reinforcements are expanding with rust and actually stressing the fiberglass. I was hoping to change the body mounts without actually removing the body (I researched the forums and see this can be done) but I'm thinking....Gulp!... should I pull the body off? (there I said it!) Currently the engine and tranny are in the car but the following are already discosnnected for the aforementioned "refreshing"- the clutch linkage, the steering column, the accelerator linkage, as mentioned the gas tank is out, the hood, radiator and rear bumpers are off! The entire interior is out. I'd have to get some help or a lift kit and build a dolly but...maybe now is the time since all this stuff is already dissassembled? Anything else need to be disconnected? I also had a post in the "fuel" forum that a previous owner ran some king of black ridgid gas lines on the frame to replace the steel ones, I suspect becuse you need the body off to run new fuel lines, I was going to leave those be but I guess I could replace them too. I feel like I'm never gonna get this thing to an east coast event!
Opinions please!

Body mounts can be replaced without pulling the body, but you DO have to jack the body up. Removing ALL of the mount bolts first, of course. You can jack one side up at a time, and replace the mounts on that side, then do the same on the other side.
If your mount brackets are pretty rusty, you might be in for a pretty big job, as the bolts may very well be stuck solid. I would suggest spraying all of the mounts and bolts down with PB Blaster(or equivalent) for days, maybe even weeks before attempting to loosen/remove rusty bolts.
"ROCKRDR" just replaced his body mounts recently....there is a thread on it here summers....might post any questions about how he did his in that thread, and get some good helpful info.

pull the body, another 5 years and more project creep. May as well do a complete restore once you get this far. Maybe you could get a driver 'vette to drive while you're finishing this one.

Thanks Joel, I'll switch to that other thread! Ebo I think I'll start with the mounts and when I'm in there look at the frame etc. to determine how to proceed. And yes if I do proceed I'd love to get a drver to have some fun with!
