Dave....just ax anybody here that has ever met me....I'm as normal as they come....whoever "they" are....

And..as promised...here's some pics of the underside of an un-restored, original hood. This one happens to be a '73, but it representative of every year model up until the BG cars. Thses pics were taken at an NCRS National Meet a few years back.

As you can see...not the best masking job in the world. Earl Shiebe is even laughing at this....
Also not the easiest job to replicate. I used a piece of thin cardboard that I ripped in half, and put the rough edge against the hood, then sprayed the black on.

I remember seeing a restoration show maybe 10 yrs ago done by BASF. They showed a 1st generation Camaro getting "re-restored" to factory after a $15k paint job. My jaw dropped as they started to over spray almost everywhere. They had various density foam they could apply, paint over then remove in order to leave the proper flaws.
I plan on smoothing some of the rough spots on my car then using a couple cans of paint to make it look better. Sounds like a C3VR annual gathering project! I'll buy the beer! ( and I question Joel's sanity)

re·store
transitive verb \ri-ˈstȯr\
: to give back (someone or something that was lost or taken) : to return (someone or something
: to put or bring (something) back into existence or use
: to return (something) to an earlier or original condition by repairing it, cleaning it, etc.

Different folks have different interpretations of the term, but in Judging events for "restored" vehicles, "restored" means to put them back to original condition, without ANY additions/subtractions of equipment, changing of colors, finishes, interior, etc etc ad nauseaum....
Fact is, if yo own the car, you can do it any way ya want...make it better, or leave it as is was....whatever floats yer boat. Plenty o room in the werld for both factions, imo. I like restored cars best, but I'll also get a kick out of a full custom, if done right. Ain't nuttin but a thang, as we-uns say.

Dave......I AM normal, I tell ya!! NORMAL!! It's everyone else that's NUTZ!!
