After having to do some serious work in the engine compartment (say! how DID they shoehorn that BBC into that compartment??!!), and having to remove the hood to do the work, I'm thinking about some kind of QUICK DISCONNECT SYTEM to remove it in the future.  That way I won't strip out the bolt holes and won't have to worry about hood alignment.

I saw a system in one of the aftermarket catalogs for about $230.  The hinges are simple and it looks like I can fabricate something kool for a whole lot less.  Just how hard can it be?? Rolling%20On%20The%20Floor%20Laughing

My oldest son suggested hood pins.  I almost slapped him into next week!!  Not in my hood.

Any ideas or suggestions?  If I screw up a hinge, it only costs about $25.

Just make sure it is rugged and foolproof. You DON'T want that hood sailing over your head when you're doing 75 down the Interstate.Ouch

Update #1 -- I decided to work with just one hinge first. doh If I screw it up, I can always get another.

I drilled out the hinge pin, enlarged the hole, and replaced it with a bushing that fits snug. I then ran a fine thread bolt through the bushing.  I used a stainless / nylon locking nut, with a thin washer in between the moving pieces.  Clearance is tight but it fit just fine.  I was so proud!

But NOW I see why the kit is $230 -- there may be no way to remove the nut and bolt once the hood is mounted.  Cry Not totally sure; more later on this.

I'll keep working it and let you know if it is worth the effort.  BTW, this "fix" did eliminate the existing slop in the hinge.  If nothing else, this should be an improvement.
