The pushbutton does operate the latch and lock. There really isn't anything the handle operates, it's simply a grab.
Honestly, it isn't that much of an oddity. A lot of early cars doors operated this way. The lock/latch, when you push on it simply pushes on the latch mechanism. If I can find my camera, I'll try to get you a pic of the inner latch on the door.

Hey all, I was worried about getting this mess back together again correctly so I re-visited my parts bin. I thought that I had kept the original storage compartment lock, but needed to search through all my crap. I found it yesterday!
Now I only have to take that to the lock smith. You all have been great! The '68s are one of a kind. I have found many areas where they are a pain in the A__! But I love her just the same.

Hey everyone, just thought I would post a closing comment on the '68 door lock. Before anyone attempts this, I hope you have small hands. I do not and it was a real challange to get to all the parts. First, there is a rod that connects the door lock mechanism to the inner door lock/handle assembly. This is very hard to reconnect. The lock itself is held in with two nuts that bolt to a retaining sheild/cylinder. You must remove the depression handle to gain access. Also, there is an adjustable rod that moves when the lock button is depressed. That rod must be completely tightened into the mechanism to allow clearance for removal. Then you can depress the button and wiggle the sheild/cylinder back and forth until you work it free. Once it is free of the door, you must remove a spring clip and slide the lock out of the sheild to get the code number and have a key made. This sheild and lock are under spring pressure so take care not to lose control of your parts. Also, pay close attention to the way they come apart so that you can get them back together correctly. Figure two hours for dissasembly and another two to get it all back together again. My locksmith was so impressed that I got it out, he cut me a key for free.
