I thought those tags were stainless!
If you use a solvent, make sure you protect the surrounding areas. double tape it and cover anything under it. Lightly dab it with laquer thinner, just dampen it so it won't run down the jamb. I've actually used 0000 steel wool even on glass and it seems to work well. If you have a urethane type paint on the car, the laquer thinner probably won't cut it too well and I really hate to suggest a stripper, you'll risk damaging the paint.
Worst case, there's a trim tag vendor that advertises in Hemming's that sells rivets for the tags. drill the old one out and soak it.
If it really is an aluminum tag, just be careful what you soak it in.
Anothe option would be to use a dremel and simply polish the paint off, again you need to be careful.
