When I took my rear wheels off I got a good look at the rear body mounts (at least that's what I believe they are).
Here is a picture of the rear passenger side one.

You can see a lot of cracks in the rubber donuts.

What happens if the eventually fail?

How difficult of a job is it to change them, one at a time? I don't have a lift or a hoist. I would have to jack the body. Has anyone done this before?

It depends on how the bolts come out and if there is any rusty metal around them. If everything comes apart then you could do it by jacking up each side with floor jacks. You need to lift each side about 3 inches to replace the #2 and #3 mounts. I have a copy of an article that came out in vETTE Mag a bunch of years ago telling how to do it. Let me know if you want me to email it to you.

Dave, the mounts can be changed, but it is time consuming, especially if you don't have a lift. Those puppies are definitely NOT in good shape!
I've seen a couple of articles on these, too, in the past.
Hey, Brian...I'd like a copy of that article, if it's not too much trouble!

HI Brian,

I just noticed your reply regarding raplacing body mounts with the body on.  I plan to do a body-on body mount replacement on my 78 this winter.  I would really appreciate a copy of the article from Vette Mag, regarding the body mount replacement, if it is still possible.

Thank you.

I replaced the #4 mounts on my 82 about a year ago and it wasn't too bad to do. The bolts and nuts were solidly rusted together and I also had to replace the nut cages and make an plate from 1/8" aluminum to attach one of the nut cages to as the area it attached to was gone! The frame mounts were luckily in good condition. I used rubber bushings, didn't thing it was a good idea to go poly here. Mounts #1, 2 and 3 will be ready soon - those DON'T look easy!
Good Luck!
